Myanmar need not stay isolated from world: Suu Kyi

Yangon, June 19 (IANS): Chairperson of Myanmar's National League for Democracy (NLD,) Aung San Suu Kyi, on Friday stressed the need for Myanmar not to be isolated from the world, calling on its citizens to have a global view.

On the occasion of her 70th birthday celebrations, Suu Kyi, who is also chairperson of the Committee for Rule of Law and Tranquillity of the House of Representatives, said Myanmar achieved independence 68 years ago and it was time for the citizens to assess the country's status in terms of living standards, Xinhua news agency reported.

This year is a very important year as the general elections will take place, she said, stressing the importance for the elections to produce correct results to decide the destiny of the country in the years ahead.

She celebrated her birthday at her office in parliament on the sidelines of the parliament session in Nay Pyi Taw.

She was released from house arrest on November 13, 2010, and resumed her political career, becoming a parliamentarian by winning a by-election in April, 2012.

Her NLD party, established in September 1988 after the previous military's take over of state power, regained legal party registration on January 5, 2012.
