New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI): External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today left for New York where she is going to participate in the International Yoga Day event being organised by the Indian Mission at the United Nations.

Swaraj, who left by an early morning Air India flight, tweeted: "Leaving for New York."

The International Yoga Day event will be attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon among others. The United Nations had in December last year declared June 21 as International Yoga Day.

The proposal had been mooted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his first address to the UN General Assembly in September last year.

Swaraj is battling a controversy over helping scam-tainted former IPL Chief Lalit Modi, who is facing money laundering and other charges, get travel papers in Britain, with the Opposition demanding her removal.

Aam Aadmi Party activists today protested outside Swaraj's residence in New Delhi, demanding her resignation.

The BJP Government very systematically tried to erase the Christmas holiday in 2014, the first year of their administration through injecting Sri. Vajpayees birthday and good governance day exactly on the 25th of December, the greatest holiday in the world.

Was it correct? Please explain.

For those people who are interested in "yoga", let them do so. But when the Government of India is working double hard and flying around the world to propagate "yoga", there is an underlying religious leverage in that.

When the BJP came into power, they tried to make Hindi as the national official language, it didn't work. Also, trying to introduce Bhagavat Gita reading in schools across the nation.

Let the parents read them the religious books at home, not in the schools. Do you agree with the idea of reading religious books at schools?

Usual cheap publicity gimmicks by BJP. Whatever hot in the market they want to latch onto it. Now, yoga is little hot favorite among celebrities and famous personalities so they too want to cash in on it. Yoga is not solely BJP's patent property and don't take all the credit for it. It was there even before BJP. it is for all Inidans regardless of caste, creed and class and not everything of it is Indian. Chinese and other nations are superior in martial arts which involves some technics of yoga like stretching and breathing technics even before yoga was introduced in India.

I wonder my Christian brothers are so agitated with Yoga & pass deregatory comments on a lady. Frist check if your folks can sit properly on the floor. I have so many lady friends who perform yoga out here and other places in the Middle East. Mainly to reduce weight and their expanding waistline. If there are time constraints they just do Surya Namaskars. Why do we give religious color to such events. its just and exercise. Even locals and foreigners have embraced yoga.

As you have stated specifically, now another big laughing issue would be emerging. These "yoga" patrons now flying around the world simply burning the tax-payers money to transform to a spiritual "yoga" world, have they ever practiced "yoga"? The the leaders of the BJP, to name them all one by one is very hard, the vast majority of them can't sit down on the floor due to their over weight. Now, they are delegated to a divine mission to fly around the world to inspire into the "yoga" mission? Another wonderful irony of the BJP Government. This is like the drunkard delivering the sermon of liquor prohibition! Amith Shaw is going to West Bengal to bless the "yoga" mission. He was supposed to fly to China.
