Udupi, Jun 22: A major fire erupted at the office of a travel agency at Manipal here on Monday June 22. The fire spread to nearby refrigeration and AC repair shops and an ATM too, causing a total loss of Rs 15 lac.

It is learnt that the fire sparked off due to short circuit at Suman Travels in a building owned by Ravindra Pai. The blaze soon spread to two adjacent Manipal Refrigeration and AC repair shops and Karnataka Bank ATM, all located in the same building.

Among the four, the refrigeration and AC repair shops, owned by Sathish, suffered the most damage as electronic equipment got charred.

Building owner Ravindra Pai blamed the fire service for the extent of loss/ "The fire spread and caused so much damage as the fire tenders arrived an hour late. If they had come immediately the loss would not been this much."

The Udupi fire service, however, said that the intimation about the fire was not adequate and that the owners did not switch off the electrical supply immediately, because of which the fire spread. "We reached the spot within 20 minutes despite the traffic," the fire service said.

The locals said that as there were inflammable items like cylinders and compressors in the shop, they feared for their lives and hence did not try to extinguish the flames while waiting for the firemen. In fact, initially the locals assumed that the fire was caused by a cylinder blast, but it was not so.

Suman Travels also suffered considerable loss while the damage to the ATM was minor.

MLA Pramod Madhwaraj arrived at spot and took stock of the situation. The locals complained to the MLA about the delay on the part of the fire service. Madhwaraj in response took the fire officials to task.

The firemen doused the flames after some effort.

Surprisingly, no one thought of saving the ATM before the fire could take (destroy) all the notes !

I don't think its right to blame the fire service entirely. Was the commercial property meeting all safety requirements.Did it have the necessary fire extinguishers ? It is very easy to blame firemen for delay but on a normal day without traffic it takes 15 mts to drive from udupi to manipal. With traffic and clogged roads it would take longer.

All emergency service in India not useful for emergency situation because of road and lazy workers.when fire or accident happen police should open road for ambulance or fire vehicle to reach proper time like other country but India they do only for minister vehicle.

People are selfish in India..thinking about only money..no emotional value..I am staying in 8th storeyed building here in Sharjah .There is one Arabic Restaurant in our building..We had a lucky escape 10 days ago..That restaurant caught fire at mid night (2 am)..(short circuit)..One pathan taxi driver who saw it immediately called Fire Station which is nearby who came in just 10 minutes and broke the glass door and extinguished fire..After everything became normal, they knocked at watchman's room !! Luckily fire did not enter kitchen room..Anyway,because of Taxi driver and swift action of fire brigade and ooperwala ka blessing we survived..

How can you blame only the fire department? Fire is caused by unsafe installation, storage, insufficient electrical protection and improper storage. Fire fighting materials also should be available on site. No one is ready to spend money to make these installations/shops safe.

V M Udupi. Fire brigade is not there in Manipal nearest is only Udupi.
But there are fire extinguishers in nearby colleges and shops. But there was no good Samaritan nearby to take a risk or to switch off main switch.

As a student of MIT, I know that the express buses, even if they're full of passengers, reach Manipal from Udupi in 5-7 minutes. Its sad to know that life saving fire tenders took 20 minutes (or maybe more as claimed by the public) to cover roughly the same distance. On one occasion, I've seen a fire engine with its siren turned 'on' climbing the slope leading to Manipal at around 15-20kmph while vehicles comfortably overtook it from the left.
But in this case I truly agree with Nagendra! Shops cannot just keep hazardous material and get excused for not keeping sufficient safety equipment.

Instead of taking fire service on task, why not the MLA asked fire department to file a case against the owner of building for not having fire safety equipment? are the people throwing blame on fire service know what kind of fire safety measures the shop owners should take? how many of they will give away way for the ambulance passing by, in mangalore this is pretty worse where i have seen youngsters zooming their bikes and cars before these ambulances instead of stopping and giving way to them.
