Mumbai hooch tragedy kingpin arrested in Delhi

New Delhi/Mumbai, June 23 (IANS): The main accused in the Mumbai hooch tragedy, in which at least 102 people have died, was arrested in the national capital on Tuesday and handed over to Mumbai police by a court.

The 26-year-old bootlegger named Mansur Latif Shaikh was arrested from Seelampur area in east Delhi by a special Delhi Police team, Deputy Commissioner of Police Veenu Bansal told IANS. In Mumbai, police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhananjay Kulkarni, also confirmed the arrest.

A duty magistrate handed over Shaikh's custody to Mumbai police, a team of which is in the national capital. The court directed them to produce him before a court in Mumbai by Thursday.

During interrogation, Shaikh accepted the allegations and said that he came to Delhi from Mumbai on Monday.

A Delhi Police statement said: "Shaikh was involved in the business of sale and supply spurious liquor for the last three years. His father used to do such activity and had introduced him to other people in this trade.

"After death of his father, he started doing this activity with his partners. He use to supply spurious illicit liquor to Frances and Gentle Saleem, who packed it in plastic pouches and sold in Malwani area of Mumbai."

Bansal told IANS that a few days ago, Mumbai police contacted them and shared the information that Mumbai's hooch tragedy main accused is hiding in Delhi "following which I deputed a special team and conducted raids at several places in east Delhi on the basis of specific inputs".

"Finally the accused was arrested from his friend's residence in Seelampur area," he said.

In Mumbai, Kulkarni said Shaikh had been arrested in a joint operation.

"In a joint operation, the Mumbai and Delhi Police teams have arrested Mansur Latif Shaikh alias Atiq. Further investigations are underway," Kulkarni told IANS.

Atiq, who operates from Mumbai, is believed to be the main supplier of the killer brew which led to the state's worst ever illicit liquor tragedy, he added.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the police and home department to ensure the death penalty for all those responsible for the hooch tragedy. Earlier, the state government ordered a probe into the incident by Chief Secretary S. Kshatriya.

Latif Shaikh said, he has been in this business from 3 years and before that, his father was running it. Actually, everything was going on through the help of Police. As per one paper, Police were getting 50 lakh per month as hafta. Francis, who was packing it in pouches and selling, was himself consuming and offering to friends, only Black Label, which he displayed to Times Of India. Now, Shaikh is only the sacrificial lamb, all others who allowed to flourish the business, are angels. Ayee hai meri Mahan Bharat.

how can Mumbai police register a case against Mansur ji now for e.g if i drink and drive it is my fault so same rule applies if i drink and die it is entirely my fault na

    Bhaksala,
    Difference is :
'Drink and drive' : fault is of the drinker for driving in an intoxicated state of mind causing potential injury/death to himself and others.
'Drink and Die' : fault is of the supplier for supplying fatally poisonous liquor to the drinker.

Declan ji why you are still blaming Mansur ji you mean to say that we need a car to drink and die then its okay not just drink and die tell me tell me... Answer , answer why not answering answer na

Intention is not to blame anyone here. Just explaining the rule. Just because one drinks and drives does not entitle the drink supplier to offer the drinker fatally poisonous drink.
Fault is both of the poisonous drink supplier as well as the drinking driver, however, the supplier of poisonous drink is the first offender and a bigger offender because of the certainty of causing death to the drinker (except if saved timely). In the case of drunken driving (not poisonous liquor) injury may or may not happen and death may or may not happen as a result of drunken driving. If death does happen due to drunken driving the offence will be greater but if the driver has consumed poisonous liquor he/she will not be alive to face punishment.

All his crimes & Sins forgiven once he joins any Political party. After 5 years the Delhi police will catch him again on similar crime. This is India.

Increase the salary of low level police personnel. Give them good amenities. Provide free education for their children. Equip them with latest arms.

The crime rate will reduce automatically.

He is follower of some guru ...and he quotes his excerpts everytime here...may be this is also inspired from such guru...Atleast we are not cheap like him to bring certain religion for crime of few people...That is the difference btw following some guru and following true path...If this bootlegger incident had happened in middleast by time he would have been advised for serious punishment upto death penalty no delay...
Yoga taught by guru cant cure this type of mental illness you need something else...

So no point in doing this one upmanship. Such crimes have been committed by all sides.
