Tihar Jail organises art classes for inmates

New Delhi June 25 (IANS): To bring out the colourful and creative side of the inmates and help their rehabilitation, visual art classes were organised in the premises of the Tihar Central Jail, a statement said on Thursday.

A Delhi based leading art director, Ratno Rudro was called for imparting training to the inmates in the art classes held on Wednesday.

Tihar Jail Director General Alok Kumar Verma announced that the training sessions will be held every fortnight for the adolescents, as their rehabilitation is a major concern.

"A group of inmates will be selected for graphic designing so that these inmates are eligible for jobs or self-employment once they get into the main stream. The aim is to bring in positivity into their lives by providing them a path to settle in today's competitive world," Verma said.

"The art classes will also bring out the creative side of the inmates and help jail authorities to have an insight into their thinking."

The session was organised by Tihar authorities in collaboration with Legends of India, a registered society organising live performances of renowned artists.

More than a hundred inmates attended the art session and learnt the creative use of hand and foot prints, colour paint to make small leaves, bushes, birds and other things.

Legends of India chairman Dipayan Mazumdar opined that many inmates have a great artistic sense.

Mazumdar said, "Some of their art work was so encouraging that we hope to hold an exhibition of their works by the end of this year for the world to see."

He said that a Facebook page, which would reflect the creative side of the Tihar inmates, will be created soon.

Legends of India has specially conceptualised and initiated the visual art classes for the jail inmates.
