No proposal to levy entry tax on sugar: Haryana minister

Chandigarh, June 25 (IANS): Haryana Finance Minister Abhimanyu said on Thursday that there was no proposal to levy entry tax on sugar in the state, on the pattern of neighbouring Punjab.

He said the price of sugar has dropped to its lowest level and was causing problem to cane producers as well as sugar mills.

"As per a report, area under cane cultivation has reduced during the current year. We have decided to help the private sugarmills and soft loan of Rs.100 crore has already been provided," he said at the meet the press programme organised at Chandigarh Press Club here.

In reply to a question, he said the government is contemplating to launch an insurance scheme for farmers.

In order to protect the domestic sugar industry, Haryana's neighbouring state Punjab last month imposed entry tax on sugar.
