Many places in Karnataka record havy rainfall


Bengaluru, June 26 (IANS): The whole of Karnataka, now covered by the southwest monsoon, will continue to get heavy rainfall, the meteorological department said on Friday.

The southwest monsoon is quite active over coastal Karnataka and south Karnataka but weakened over north interior Karnataka, meteorological officials said.

Bhagamandala in Kodagu district received heaviest downpour of 26 cm on Thursday.

Other places which recorded heavy rainfall on Thursday were Madikeri in Dakshina Kannada district (19 cm), Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada and Karkala in Udupi districts with 16 cm each, Mudibidre in Dakshina Kannada and Somawarpet in Kodagu districts at 15 cm each, and Siddapura in Udupi at 13 cm.

As many as 33 places in Karnataka received rainfall of more than one cm on Thursday, and 20 places had a rainfall of one cm, officials said.

The Met Office has asked the fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea as strong onshore winds up to speed of 45 to 55 km per hour are likely along and off Karnataka coast during the next 24 hours from Friday.

Bengaluru city will witness a cloudy sky and receive one or two spells of rain and thundershowers on Friday. It will be windy as well, weather forecast said.

The city received 0.5 mm of rainfall on Thursday.

On Friday, the maximum temperature in Bengaluru is likely to hover around 30 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 20 degrees, officials added.

Bengaluru recorded a maximum temperature of 30.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday, three notches above the season's average while the minimum temperature was 21.6 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average.
