Woman sentenced to death for UAE murder

Dubai, June 29 (IANS): A woman who killed an American teacher in December last year was on Monday sentenced to death by the Federal Supreme Court of Abu Dhabi.

Alaa Bader Abdullah Al Hashemi, 29, was held guilty of stabbing to death Ibolya Ryan, 47, in a shopping mall toilet on Al Reem Island and "creating a handmade bomb" that she placed in front of an Egyptian-American doctor's home, the Khaleej Times reported.

She was also held guilty of sending money to Al Qaeda in Yemen, knowing the funds would be used in terrorist acts.

Hashemi asked the court to provide her with psychological help, saying she had "unreal visions" and would see "ghost-like people" due to a chronic mental illness.

The court ordered psychiatric tests which showed she was aware of her actions.

Authorities arrested her three days after the incident. Details show that she created an online account where she promoted terrorist ideas and spread information that harmed the United Arab Emirates.

She carried out the attack shrouded in a full black veil, earning her the nickname of the Reem Island Ghost.
