Bengaluru: 2 farmers end lives, 3 attempt suicide

Bengaluru, Jun 30 (DHNS): Two farmers committed suicide, while a farmer couple and another agriculturist attempted to kill themselves in separate cases on Monday.

Mahesh, 35, from Panakanahalli in Mandya taluk, was found hanging from a tree on the outskirts of the village. Mahesh had grown sugar cane and paddy on land and had borrowed Rs 1.9 lakh from various banks. He is said to have borrowed money from private persons also.

Mahesh had sold some portion of his land to repay a loan he had taken from a pawn broker. The banks had issued him notices for repayment of loans, it is said. He is survived by his mother and two sisters.

Bhoganandeeshwarappa, 55, from Gidaganahalli in Gauribidanur taluk of Chikkaballapur district, ended his life by consuming poison on Monday. He was dejected about the fact that his borewell had gone dry.

A debt-ridden farmer-couple attempted to commit suicide by consuming poison at Horabailu near Choradi in Shivamogga taluk on Monday.

Teekappa, 45, who owns two acres of dry land, had borrowed a housing loan of Rs 2 lakh from a bank and a farm loan to grow maize. He could not repay the money as the crop did not yield a good price. Teekappa had borrowed from relatives and friends to repay the farm loan in instalments. He had availed loan from another bank recently to repay his friends and relatives. Teekappa and his wife Janakamma, 40, fought over the issue.

Dejected over this, he consumed pesticide in his farm. His wife also consumed poison at home after being informed that Teekappa had done so. They have been admitted to the McGann hospital in Shivamogga.

A 27-year-old farmer, frustrated over the delay in payment of dues towards his sugar cane produce and accusing Kudachi MLA P Rajeev of deceiving him, attempted to commit suicide by consuming pesticide at the venue of the farmers’ protest near the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi on Monday. Siddaram Lakshman Hasare, a resident of Nilji in Raibag taluk, consumed pesticide before going to the farmers’ meet.

The police, who were suspicious of his activities, frisked him away and recovered the poison bottle from him. They rushed him to the district hospital where he is undergoing treatment and is said to be out of danger.

Hasare, who had grown sugar cane on his eight-acre farm, had sold 198 tonnes of the produce to a factory. The factory paid only Rs 1,000 per tonne to the farmer. Hasare had taken a loan of Rs 3.5 lakh from Karnataka Vikas Grameen Bank and Rs 4 lakh from private money lenders. In the death note, Hasare has charged Rajeev with not returning the money borrowed from him. Though Hasare claimed that he had not consumed poison, the police rushed him to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

On hearing about the incident, Rajeev visited the hospital, where the farmer took him to task over not returning the money.

Elroy, Italian parliament is filled with corrupt politicians, i hope you remember their Ex PM Mr. Berlusconi, Italians are good for Mafia & illegal business.
Thanks, we don't need any Italians to control India & loot more, we have seen enough for past 10 years. Indian politicians are corrupt, but little better than Italian Mafia's.
Please apply for your Italian passport, if Italian can get easy Indian passport, i am sure you can get one.

Nowadays Farmers are not getting the price of hard work. lobour cost is too high also for agriculture work no workers are available. fertilizer is too costly. Normal farmers cannot afford to buy modern fertilizer.
At end of the year farmers has to go for loan for their living.
So it is better not to do agriculture work.

If Italian was ruling India India would have been much better. Indians are looting India. Dont compare Italians with dirty politic Indians.
Do you know how many witnesses killed by Your BJP government in MP . Killed because they were witnesses. Officially its 25. Karnataka is far safer than this MP Rajastan UP. You will not Imagine whats happening there. Modi thought that India is like Gujarat where he can silence the people by shooting them. Watch the news and see. How many farmers are dying in Maharashtra. You people are just blame Italians. Indians are looting and killing Indians. If Italians were ruling it would have been much better. I would prefer Chinese outsourcing of Indian administration.

Dear Elroy…..you have been diagnosed with CONGiss & UPA syndrome which can’t be cured in Karnataka….. We are talking about Karnataka in this news not about BJP or anything else….. If you can’t afford to give homage to deceased soul of that farmer no problem but at least don’t hurt their soul with political vendetta

Dear shettys, i dont need Italian passport from you . I was born in farmers family so i know the pain of that. Neither congress did good nor BJP. Its you people brought the topic of Italian in farmers death see the comments below. I know how hard its to be a farmer. I saw that in my house. You people no need to teach me farmers life. Its sad to see both the congress and BJP thrashing the farmers which is hurting. Its the Indians ruling nor Italians in India. People like you are filled with fundamentalism which is bad for the society. Dont escape the thing by saying the problem is of Karnataka. All over India farmers are dying. And nobody is bothered about them. Because our vision towards farmer is so low.

Farmers - don't they realize how much loan is realistic and how else to conduct livelihood, when farms do not yield.

I think some NGOs need to spend time in educating them about managing finances, finding alternate employment avenues.

Look at our Bijapur brigade. They rush back when it rains for their farming, migrate to lucrative Mangalore otherwise. I don't think they get desperate.

Look at Keralites, Mangaloreans, when the traditional means were not good enough, they reached new shores of the gulf. Was it good/bad another thing, but none took the rope.

Is there politics involved in Farmer Suicide? Are they killing themselves or are enticed to do so?

MR. JD its easy to say sitting in a AC room by typing in DW. They dont have accounting softwares or the Finance department to prepare balance sheet. They might have taken that loan for personal use also. But its very sad that a farmer has to suicide. If a Engineer or businessman dies its not a big loss. But if a farmer dies it creates imbalance in society. A farmer doesn't have outside finance support or somebody who is supporting him by earning in Gulf. They are depending on their hard work and nature. Its not easy to migrate to mangalore and work leaving all their land. I know the labours are earning more in mangalore.Life depends on hope and health. If hope dies then you will die. Nobody give counselling for farmers. They are treated as the least in the society.
