Dubai : Strict 7 kg hand baggage rule on AI Express flights

Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai

Dubai, Jun 30: Issue concerning air passenger baggage has been in the news over the past week with some of the major airlines in India approaching the union government to allow them to charge passengers for check-in baggage. But the government has turned down their demand for the time being.

But hand baggage carried by passengers has become a serious concern for airlines, as already several airlines have issued strict guidelines to passengers to restrict their handbags upto only 7 or 8 kg. IndiGo airlines charges for every additional 7 kg handbag at Dubai airport, be it a dutyfree bag or passenger's personal belonging, and so also budget airline FlyDubai, a subsidiary of Emirates Airlines, which is strictly following the 7 kg handbag guideline.

Air India Express, a subsidiary of India's national carrier has been quite generous compared to other airlines, with passengers being allowed hand luggage up to 10 kg during check-in and also another few kilos from dutyfree. Many times, airline staff help passengers to check in additional baggage just before boarding the flight. This was a rare gesture from AI Express as compared to any other airline in the world. But now, additional baggage has caused huge inconvienence to the airline not only in terms of weight but also safety of the aircraft. The unplanned increase in weight could cause danger to the aircraft, say sources.

In case of passengers carrying additional weight, more than the stipulated 7 kg, the airline may impose AED 60 per kg at the boarding gate.

"Safety of the aircraft is prime concern for us. We do not intend to make money from this guideline, but we need to fly as per the regulations of DGCA. Quite a few times, we had to offload a few bags from check-in baggage due to excess weight carried inside the aircraft," said a senior official in Dubai to daijiworld.com.

The new guidelines are expected to be implemented in all UAE airports from July 1, 2015.

    Dear Sir,
I, intend to travel on the 3rd of July ie coming Friday. I, had booked my ticket in the month of January 2015.Apart from the stipulated 20kg allowance , I, paid an additional 5/BD to avail 10 kg more luggage. After a weeks later , I, read a clipping about Air india celebrating its 10 anniversary since it commenced. In connection of that Air India Express will be granting additional 10kg luggage allowance thus allowing a customer to take 40 kg baggage.ie those who paid 5 bd and got 10kg. My question is it applicable in this month and if so yes for How long will this service continue. Air India Express staff kindly reply at the earliest.

Guess Air India plan is very good for aircraft safety. They should be awarded by PM Modiji. If the person caring more than 7kg or 10kg check in hand bang it is unsafe for aircraft. But if the same person paying AED 60/kg then aircraft is safe. Woh good for making money. Cheap thinking. Then all guys can carry 20kg check in hand bag with paying extra charge. Aircraft will be super safe. Aisebi Air India aircraft nahi hai o ek Tango riksha wala gaadi hai or old model auto riksha
This is good joke for the year.

There is an set of standards maintained by DGCA.By default checked in Baggage is calculated at 7 kg per person and this standards weight is maintained for weight and distribution calculation by the crew.If an passenger has to carry above 7kg he is asked to pay for the excess amount of weight and the same is logged in the weight which helps the crew to find excess weight and to use it in calculation. Its easy to blame the airline that they are asking to pay right.

Crash or death all in God's hands.
Mistakes are MAN made. And some times pilots are responsible for the crashes, for e.g. some recent air crashes. Man(pilot) is not 100% correct always, God is not responsible for MAN MADE MISTAKES.

But in this article, Mr.Ahmed from Doha, appreciating AI express 1st one to provide direct flights from UAE to Mangalore. But here HENRY expressed his opinion about that ill fated airline AIE & how it was crashed first time in the history of Mangalore. No any wrong in it.

One more technical explanation to this is to do with earth rotation and flight time. When you're flying towards India (west to east), the flight time is considerably shorter due to moving winds from west to east. When flying east to west, the flight time is long hence more fuel burnt. That's one reason they have different weight restrictions.

As for the general weight restrictions:

The aircraft used by AI is the 737 NG series with a maximum takeoff weight of 70 - 79 metric tonnes depending on the model (700, ER or 800).They do wish to reduce fuel burn and keep the airplane from an over weight. I see many passengers with a huge discomfort on allowable weight. Airplanes are not designed with an unlimited weight capacity in mind. The per bag weight limit is because they have to balance the aircraft and find it Center of Gravity point. The pilot has to then set the trim. Generally and Aircraft is designed to be unstable about it center of gravity such that in case of loss of power, it should pitch nose down.

Lydia Lobo, Kadr...your point is right ....it may because one reason..technically there is no difference between budget flight and regular flight....FUEL consumed based on flight PAYLOAD....the load is high more fuel burnt...air liners introduced budget airline in the price of reducing Pay load on trip....so if they restrict weight some what justifies their price ...commonly while returning people use less language ..so may be they want further to balance its cost... but 2 things are unfair that .....1) now international Fuel price is ped ..they should pass the benefit to customers either reducing ticket price or allowing more weight...2)..as you said while returning its only 20 kg...some passengers ( Bachelors) may take only 10 kg..so ticket counter personals should show some behavior in adjusting / sharing additional weight on them...that is not there they are not customer friendly anymore...

I understand that the permitted weight for a passenger to carry from Dubai is 30 Kg but while returning, the weight limit is 20 Kgs only. Can the officials explain how they balance this 10 Kg per person weight on an aircraft ? How did it pose danger when one brings more weight from Dubai but its alright to fly lighter while returning ?

This matter requires some investigation. I always felt that the air crafts carried cargo from M'luru to make money. As per today's news that they are restricting weight from Dubai, I suspect they contemplate carrying cargo while returning too.

None of my business - is it ? But, why fool the public by giving cheap explanations ? You make money man - everybody makes. Don't feign your care and concern by giving safety reasons !

I like your point Well Wisher, irrelevant to how much weigh. Let the airlines that are flying from Dubai follow this new concept and all go Kingfisher way, instead of bringing a new method every day to rob the passengers !

The airline officials expose their 'foot in mouth' state when they say its not their intention to make money. Lets assume 80% of the passengers have access baggage and the airline charged all of them for the weight - how did that reduce the weight of the aircraft ? Are they leaving behind one of the engines to compensate access carried by the passengers ?? Acting Smart ! Huh !

To be honest with you all, I am very much delighted to read this news. Trust me, this will bring a lot of relief to most passengers who follow the rules!

Time and again I have seen passengers carrying not only 1 but as many as 3 hand bags that too loaded above 10 – 15kg/bag, sometimes difficult to carry and really difficult to store in the overhead compartments! In doing so, they not only trouble themselves but also disturb lot other fellow passengers by blocking more than required space per passengers for hand bags, pulling & hitting the bags while carrying more than one bag while boarding the aircraft and most importantly cheating by hiding excess baggage! I think, people should be charged not AED 60/kg but it should be AED 120/kg so that people don’t even dream of carrying 1kg extra in the cabin!

In Shaa Allah, will fly peacefully this time round and hopefully all the passengers will have enough space to store their hand bags just above their own seats in the overhead compartments.

but AI is only comparing hand baggage of other airlines company.i strongly recommend to compare with total luggage weight allowed.it will double than AI.normally AI allow 20kg but others allow 40 Kg including Jet airways.

and you are telling people are buying things from duty free like ration.yea of course they want to give to their loved one.even duty free purchase will cost more than actual cost from supermarket.

"Safety of the aircraft is prime concern for us" of course it is a prime concern by airlines. If you pay you can carry how much you want that time the above concern wont effect. The empty bag only weighing 2 to 4 kg then what you can carry? People stop buying from duty free and it will effect the economy of the country. @Guru Mangalore,Air Hostess will/may loose Job not because her weight causes extra fuel, but for the aircraft, she is not a model or for passengers is not a very attractive one.And about hand baggage weight concerns ,passengers should think first about safety than carrying lot of weight in hand ,and blaming air craft.Only I find 15kg for international travellers is bit hard.(not h.baggage)since from Mumbai we are allowed 23kgs,these extras we were compelled to pay per Kilo 330rupees.previously were 20-25kg were allowed.now reduced to 15kg.Not really amusing.
