Udupi, Jun 30: Fire broke out in migrant workers' colony at Adi Udupi here on Tuesday June 30, destroying as many as seven shanties.

The migrant workers stay in a private land belonging to one Vittal Shetty. There are altogether 45 shanties in an area of 3 acres, out of which seven were burnt to ashes in the fire.

It is said that flames on a stove in one of the shanties spread due to a sudden breeze, and the fire quickly caught the adjacent shanties.

Luckily, a majority of the workers and children were away at work, and no injury was reported.

A lady who noticed the flames informed the fire service. However, as the area is not easily accessible, the fire tenders had difficulty reaching the spot on time.

After some effort, the fire was finally doused and personnel also prevent the flames from spreading to nearby houses.

The loss has been estimated at Rs 2,000 per shanty, altogether about Rs 14,000.

Udupi town police have registered a case.

I know it is sad these M.Workers lost their roof over their head..
But anyone here - would they like anyone encroaching on their property - rich or poor?
Best way for them is to build on roadside where Govt. notices their presence and rehabilitate them in Govt. owned land somewhere else.
Some NGO in that area should assist them in getting Government help.
