Electrocution death: NHRC notice to Delhi government, police

New Delhi, July 1 (IANS): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to the Delhi government and police over the death of a vegetable vendor due to alleged electrocution in a public toilet, a statement said on Wednesday.

Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports, the NHRC has sought a report from Delhi Chief Secretary K.K. Sharma and Delhi Police Commissioner B.S.Bassi within four weeks.

Kishan Lal, 40, was electrocuted while entering a public toilet in east Delhi's Kishan Kunj on June 24.

The NHRC noted that despite several complaints lodged with the power distribution company, it failed to act leading to the vegetable vendor's death.

"The commission has observed that the contents of the press reports, if true, raise serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim," it added.
