Mangaluru, Jul 3: Hundreds of taximen descended on the streets here on Friday July 3, in protest against mobile app-based Ola taxi service.

The protest was organized by Dakshina Kannada District Taximen and Maxicab Association in collaboration with various like-minded bodies. A rally comprising over a hundred taxis was taken from Jyothi to Nehru Maidan, after which a protest meet was held in front of the DC's office.

Addressing the protest, Federation of Lorry Owners' Agents' Association president J R Shanmugappa said, "App-based Ola and Uber taxi services are functioning illegally. Just as they have been banned in Kolkata and Chandigarh, they should also be banned here in Karnataka.

The union government has issued notification that the deputy commissioner (DC can take any action against these private taxi services. We demand the DC to take strict action against Ola and make Dakshina Kannada a model district in the state," he added.

"These taxi services they are not following rules under the Motor Vehicles Act. There are 186 cases of violation of law by these companies in the state. The DC can stop Ola service on the grounds of safety, as done in Kolkata and Chandigarh. Ola does not have permits. When already taxis are there, what is the necessity of allowing them to operate?" he questioned.

Turning emotional, Shanmugappa added, "Instead of having this, please give us poison."

Issuing a warning to the authorities, he said, "Within one month proper action should be taken against Ola service or we will hold a severe protest."

Former MLC Monappa Bhandary, who is also the president of Mangaluru taximen association said, "From past 6 months we have been issuing memorandums against Ola service, but no action has been taken so far. This has put the common taxi drivers into much difficulties. We have met RTO, DC and other officers concerned regarding this, but in vain. This cannot be tolerated."

Making serious allegations against private taxi firms, he said, "When prices of spare parts have increased, can these taxi companies charge lesser fares from passengers? We suspect that black money is involved and this is a way to turn it into white money. Politicians may also be involved in it. If this continues, we will intensify our protest. These companies are functioning illegally - no one knows who is the owner and who is the driver."

Karnataka State Tourist Vehicle Owners' Association president K G Ravindra said, "There is no proper information about drivers, not even badge. These private companies are monopolizing the market and making others slaves."

Mangaluru Airport Taxi Drivers Association secretary Radhakrishna Holla said, "In Karnataka there are 25,000 cabs belonging to private online services. They have no proper documents and international investments have gone into them. The government has allowed them to make backdoor entry. The DC should take strict action."

Mangaluru Travel Owners' Association president Roshan Pinto, Mangaluru Taximen Association general secretary K Anand, Udupi Taximen Association general secretary Ramesh Kotian and others were present.

Speaking to daijiworld, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said that he is yet to receive the memoranum submitted by the protestors, and would take necessary action after examining the matter.

It seems the private firms' taxi services are far better organized than local ones. It is up to the government and authorities to allow the services like OLA considering the public interests with regulations to control. If local taxi owners are unemployed because of this proper replacement job has to be given to them. As everything now a days getting high tech using internet and mobile, there is nothing wrong if the services are organized by taxi firms.

Cost of living is 10 times to that of mangalore but Taxi fares are 10 times the fare you would pay in Mumbai or other cities. Once my airfare from Mumbai to mangalore fare was Rs2200 and airport to ciy taxi fare was 1200 it seems they need to be paid for return trip to the airport. Why should the passenger pay for drivers return. D.R Mangalore,
It is quite possible to run a taxi business profitably by using advanced technology with sophisticated business model. One can see the location of all the cabs on a computer screen in a control room and direct the nearest cab to pick up the nearest passenger. They save time and petrol.

Most of the major cities in the world have cab companies like OLA. Mangalore is developing and need to have such company for the safety, economy and most of all to avoid traffic bottlenecks. A country like India which is depending on imported oil will also save lot of foreign exchange by running cabs efficiently.

In future cab companies can use the hybrid vehicles which can run with 1/3 of fuel cost and emit less toxic. This way, it is a WIN-WIN situation for the citizens as well to the Nation.

As far as unemployment of traditional cab drivers is concerned, the OLA can always hire an experienced drivers and train them with etiquette.

Whether there is a massive rally or not,the truth is always bitter. In reality private taxi owners are the biggest looters. That is why when the big competition comes, they cannot digest it.Their looting business will come down and commission share of all related agencies, brokers of private taxi, cab owners will also subsequently come down/reduced.That is why they are protesting to block OLA operators. If the private taxi, cab owners bring their fare down in line with OLA operators fare, definitely there will not be any mess or issue. Both parties will get their business. But RTA, admin will bulge to the pressure of private taxi and cab owners protest and try to stop OLA operators after receiving their gunny bag full of money from the private taxi and cab owners. This is not fair.Always healthy and constructive competition should be there in the business. Then only middle and poor class people can survive in this society/world.RTA,DC department, please take a wise decision, don't come under ny pressure of private taxi and cab owners protest. They are the biggest looters.

General public should come out and take a rally in support of operating OLA cab in Mangalore. Competition is very important and customer should have a choice. Govt. should make sure that there is no price fixing between OLA and private Cabs which will defeat the very purpose of competition in business.

A private Cabie overcharged me almost double the normal price for one way trip of 30 miles from Mangalore. I couldn't argue with him looking at his pathetic appearance. I could afford, but what about many poor people coming home from Gulf? It is not fair practice.

Taxi from Airport to Hampankatta charges around 500 to 700. They have charged Rs. 450-00 from Airport to A J Hospital. The Ola cabs charge just Rs. 200 from Hampankatta to Airport and vice versa. These private taxi owners swindled the passengers all these years and this should stop. They tried to manhandle the passenger as well as Ola drivers. Once the case is registered they want to protest. I have been to Bangalore and other places, there also Ola cabs charge very less, sometimes lesser than Auto. Mangalore will be better off with Ola cabs as competitors to these private taxis.

All cabs owner must pay Driver salary, Commercial cab Insurance, fuel charges, Service charges, Maintenance , tyres coast which is very high, spare parts etc, then how can OLA can do business for loss. Their only Intention is that they want their Black money to be white that's it. Please Ban Ola cabs, otherwise it will lead to unemployment, poverty and many other problems.

And also 40kms around airport can be 200 rs of petrol... U r right about that... But i m pretty sure that it wont be 500-600rs unless you have an old messed up car...and lets not forget.. 90% of these taxies use diesel which is cheaper than petrol...
And if u r going to use the sympathy card (they hav family, vehicle maintenance etc) why dont they join ola and earn more instead of squeezing the money out of customers from the firt trip and then simply squatting flies inside their vehicles in a taxi stand?

Monappa Bhandary is so obsessed with OLA cabs that he is mixing up a great concoction of lies half truths with ignorance. Hope this will clear his mind about the misconceptions about OLA.

OLA is a technology based company hence comes under IT department, and hence not directly under RTO. In Digital India of today this regressive thinking will take them nowhere.

All the owners/ operators of Ola cabs are partners with OLA Company.

OLA ensures that all the Cabs are registered taxis with drivers having proper driving license number and batch numbers.

So to say that OLA runs their cabs without the permission of RTO is baseless and is malicious propaganda.

OLA provides drivers with their APPs and GPS so the safety of passengers is considered foremost by being able to track their movements and attend any complaints immediately.

Many members o the taxi associations have joined with OLA and are quite content with their earnings. They are behaving politely with passengers and speak gently. It is a great lie that OLA charges hidden charges once the passengers gets in . The passengers like it and they are entitled to have a cab of their choice.

The Taxi association guys must stop growing taller by cutting others head instead reduce their rates and develop a humane approach which will definitely bring them back to the service industry than holding poor passengers to ransom.

OLA is going to stay whether anybody likes it or not, as goondagiri and molestation of woman will never be able stop OLA as it is liked by most of the travelers as indicated by the feedback shown by the comments of Daijiworld!

note: Dear Daiji, If this is called massive it is time the word massive must be redefined at once! : )

How many passengers will support this kind of rally?

To stay in business, be competitive,on time, courteous and don't talk too much with the passengers asking their private life as if you know them for generation.

Customer is the King. He/she will choose which taxi to hire. Supporting this kind of rally is like supporting extortion of fare from the passengers. Black or white, who cares? We choose the best.

Maybe a good thought for the taxi association to take assistance of a local entrepreneur and start their own version of OLA cabs, based on a similar business model. This way, they will be a part of the ever-changing and constantly evolving business concepts. They can look at effectively competing against threat posed by new business ideas. As they are locals and have been earning their livelihood by driving a taxi, they deserve to have the first choice of right to the business - Not any big corporation from a neighbouring state wiping away their chance to legally and righteously earn a living. If these Taxi drivers are denied a means of earning which may be the only skill they have, then what alternative occupation does the government or society have in mind to help them to move on. Very soon, all services and jobs in Mangalore will be taken by people from other states and native Mangloreans may have to resort to begging at the worst.

Protect jobs for the locals by upgrading their skills and starting a taxi company like OLA, MERU etc. I hope some person of influence, will start a network taxi company and integrate all existing / registered taxi drivers of Mangalore origin. This is their land, and like in the Gulf, those locals who are willing to work should benefit from business opportunities first. Only when we cannot do a job or we do not have the qualification / capital / expertise, should we let corporations or outside states to make money in our land. I am referring purely to the nt so very well educated or maybe uneducated class of workers who have very limited options for employment. These are my spontaneous views, and i am not expecting any person to accept them or reject them - The intention is only to help people look at one of the many aspects that the above case may have and a means to get a balance between OLA grabbing the business and our locals retaining their means of livelihood.

In metro cities like Mumbai all types of services identical to Ola like Meru, women driven spl. cabs, thrive and work in amity along with the conventional taxis and rickshaws then why all this drama!! Majority of the local drivers act like goons, get into arguments, and even abuse passengers (if they come to know he is an outsider) if their demands are not met, people are fedup with this since long and monopoly has to be broken to maintain balance and the general public does not suffer!! These guys just want to make one or two trips a day and earn big money!! If a survey is taken in the city am sure more than 80% will be voting for Ola type service!!

Day will come more such type of services will enter Mangaluru market after the big success of Ola like as in Mumbai!!

Fact that Ratan Tata has invested heavily in Ola shows that it is genuine and has a very good business model which has sustained so far and will prosper in the future while giving comfortable and economical, safe travelling avenue for the common man who is already burdened with so many burning issues!!! Jai Hind!!

It is reported that one of the speakers in the rally has become emotional and had asked for poison. It is freely available in the market, better he can buy from the market consume himself and also give the same to his other co-leaders so that this public nuisance could come to an end for ever!

The Taxi and Auto Drivers' Associations can not demand ban on Ola as any one can do business as per Indian Law.

If there is any violation of Law, they can approach Court.

Public should have the choice to avail services.

The Associations should make the Drivers courteous and polite. They should also charge reasonable rates. They should compete with private service providers by providing good service.

They should increase their business by providing quality service, not by rowdyism or banning other service providers.

    Dear Airport Taxi GOONS,

Even I own a car. As per my perfect calculations, 1.5 litres of petrol (Rs 100Approx) is more than enough to ply from Airport to Kuntikan Junction in a chilled AC car. I would have been happy to pay if you would charge me double (Rs 200) or even Rs 250 (Mehngai ka zamana hai).
How do you justify the amount that you charge (Approx Rs.450 - 500) for this one sided trip? And more over your cars are meant for more mileage.
Are you GOONS looting the money from the public and constructing one more International Airport next to the existing one?
Come on justify this.. Who among you GOONS is the smartest and educated GOON, reply to my comment

Mangalore Airport Taxis should charge fair amounts and then there will be no problems with competition. In Mangalore they charge 700 Rs to the city center where as even in Bangalore with Meru Taxi it is less for twice the distance.

When the new technology is introduced we initially resist later accept because the new technology eases the same work more efficiently and economically. The Ola cab could reduce fair because of technology and the use of it gives more business and less waste of fuel due to zero passenger hunting. The other cab and auto should join Ola cab and share the technology for your good. Good luck!
