Mangaluru: Locals block ongoing SEZ works at Jokatte

Mangaluru, Jul 4: Ongoing work at Mangalore Special Economic Zone near Jokatte came to a standstill after locals joined together and brought machines to a halt on Friday July 3.

Citizens Action Committee, which is fighting against coke and sulfur unit alleging them to be polluting climate here, also received support for the fight carried out by it. People of Jokatte have been claiming that black dust from coke and sulfur unit has been forming a filmy layer on their homes and dresses, and causing lot of pollution. They also drew support from the citizens who overlooked barriers of political ideology and came together on Friday.

At around 2 am on Friday, citizens of Jokatte came together and stopped giant machines that were operational there. The officials, sensing trouble, summoned reserve police force. The locals were engaged in verbal duel with the officials of MSEZ till 11 am on Friday, and also took to task Mescom and railway staff for extending support to these works.

After the police promised to register cases against the guilty, and the machines were sent back, the people calmed down. Works in the village being conducted on behalf of MSEZ and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd have come to standstill because of this agitation.

    This coke and sulpher not effected to politicians they are far from this project place. they already earned millions because company dealt with them so the village residents suffering from illness and falling sick they are not bother about eve Muncipal corporation shut down the action against this kind of projects after the waste water drain and to the river or sea and make harmful life for near living residence. really trying now india want to become a digital country. without this kind of business can't efford Bently Mercedes cars. Now the village residence only fight against this arsenic producing companies why this kind of projects started only residential places why don't try on far from the residence place some companies not following saftey awareness almost incompleted project and negligence in saftey envoirnment.

    IT IS TOTALLY UN IMAGINABLE A PLANT PROCESSING COKE & sulfur in coastal belt ?.Ideally it should be located CLOSE TO MINING SOURCE OR BARREN LAND .WE ARE 7TH LARGEST COUNTRY IN WORLD WITH WASTE LAND IN NORTHERN KARNATAKA.

    another sad thing is people around that place should get work but they dont have one.. people rather has to spend on the doctors for their health issues on unhygienic environment ..

    I found few people's comments to be supporting development and urbanization I would like to ask to visit this place and live there so you that you can enjoy polluted air and have some coke sulphur mixed water bath o people you only think of making india a singapore,dubai, US but reality is what you ever thought because you are rich enough you stay in town and city never cared about pollution you live in a/c run in a/c better look at those people who are effected because of this lifestyle your living why dont u just google this 'bhopal industrial tragedy' one of the great effect of industrialization now if you say this is an accident or people back then dint have sufficient safety instructions ok I agree but what happened few days back 'maggi' every1 used to eat and feed lead. this is what you call development ? am not saying I want stone ages back but my point is there should protection to this people and all industries should control any pollution gets out of them.

    Now a days entire coastal area of D.K polluted because of these industries. People who lived since ages forced to leave their residential area & fertile land and move towards city or other places. Hardly 10% people may benefited by these industries and many gets sufferings only. No value for human life due to development. I think except Mangalore corporation area entire Mangalore Taluk noted in the name of development.

    Please respect human life avoid pollution and poison atmosphere to our GREAT INDIA future generation. Factory all to build out of residency area. Hope these surroundings locals earlier shifted from Panambur - time of New Manlgore Harbor construction. Now again spoiling the their valuable life is not fare.
    This is the duty of respective Health and Environment Authority to advise. Whether to permit such kind of factory's in residency surrounding. We all have to stand together and fight for these innocent citizens peaceful life.

    INDUSTRIES must come, no question in that.but the problem is what kind of? this is really tricky.
    M'lore is already reached choking point.the city comes to virtual standstill during rush hours. unplanned development has killed the joy of city life.
    SO need of the hour is better infrastructure then industries.
    ITs unbelievable this city has just 1 park!!.
    OUR coastal eco-system has certain limits it can't sustain mega-polluting industries.
    SO while considering few jobs should we destroy our environment permanently??

    I think before we comment we must understand the ground reality.. The hassles those people undergoing in that place.. The sufferings.. The sleepless nights because chimneys.
    You wil not understand unless if you visit the place the night and personally experience. I was staying in the area for few days and it was horrible. Many chimneys emitting fire of high temperature. You cannot survive in the area without fan.. If power cut impossible to live.. too hot climate outside because of the huge chimneys.. Let us not comment unless we respect the human lives over there!

    What if people residing near railway line and people residing near highways objects the projects...?does it means to cancel all railway lines and highways?...i myself effected by Nagarjuna power project..but it proved good now with 24 hr power supply to udupi and D k.

    Development and Progress will not happen without some amount of pollution. The concerned regulations and PCB norms and regulations should be checked and adhered. Any major project will get go ahead clearance only after verification by the state PCB. By stalling such projects will only deprive the people / region from development.
