Lucknow, May 11: The BSP on Friday emerged as the single largest party and is set to head Uttar Pradesh's next government as it took the lead in 188 of the 402 seats which went to polls. The counting of votes in the Assembly elections started at 7 am on Friday.
Samajwadi Party, heading a coalition government, has conceded defeat with 101 seats against the BJP’s 60 seats.
The trends indicated a better showing by the Congress, ahead in 24 seats, which has already indicated support to a BSP-led government. Independents and others were leading in 29 seats. The state Assembly has a strength of 403 and election was countermanded in one seat due to the death of a candidate.
