Embarrassed to be called a former Lokayukta: Justice Hegde

Haveri, Jul 7 (DHNS): Justice Santosh Hegde said on Monday that he was feeling embarrassed to call himself a former Lokayukta.

He told a press conference in the city that he was now 75 years old and did not want to take up any government assignment in future.

Hegde said that he foresaw legal, technical difficulties if efforts were made to remove Lokayukta Justice Bhaskar Rao - embroiled in a controversy over graft in the anti-corruption watchdog.

The former Supreme Court judge said that it would have been proper for Justice Rao to either go on leave or resign, but he was complicating matters. Justice Hegde favoured a CBI inquiry into the whole episode.

Justice Rao had disowned his son when activist S R Hiremath had, in March, brought to his notice the dealings in the institution that his son was involved in.

Now, Justice Rao claims that his son is innocent, Justice Hegde said.

There seems to be no morality in the functioning of the Lokayukta and he is working in a blatant manner, Justice Hegde said.

There is a different statement each day regarding the CCTV cameras at the office of the ombudsman, he said, adding that there were fears of files going missing there. Justice Hegde regretted the fact that the Lokayukta had turned into a rehabilitation post for retired judges.

But Mr Hegde, how is it that Syed Riaz, who is alleged to be the main conduit in the entire scam from within, was allowed to continue as PRO even during your term? Did you not know that he was a mere SI and had no business to be PRO of Lokayukta. Syed Riaz has been in the Lokayukta since the time of your predecessor Mr M N Venkatachala, and remained in the post for 15 years and has now risen to Joint Commissioner rank. Perhaps you should have checked your own PRO's antecedents and sent him back to police department.

But Mr.Hegde, during your term, you targeted only BJP leaders with the guidance of UPA government. This could the reason for Lokayuktha to go bad during Congress term.

Thank you, Mr. Vinaya Hegde for all your dedications of uprightness and frankness in various viewpoints that relate to the justice in India. Your leadership added with your honesty and integrity is very much admired from a distance, and we wish you continued good health and happiness.

I had the pleasure of meeting with you at Bangalore Airport couple of years ago while we were travelling in different directions. I have also had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Vinaya Hegde at the St.Aloysius College complex along with Fr. Denzil Lobo.

I still remember the good old days of St. Aloysius College, and both Vinaya and yourself have been good athletes of your own standards.

Still remember your beloved father -a dynamic personality with a powerful voice even when he was the Advocate in Mangalore. Your family has contributed a great deal for our Society in Mangalore for which we are grateful.

There is disappointment to every one as there is allegations of fence itself grazing the maze. In every department/group there are good and bad people. Gold will always remain as gold and the color of fake will be out sooner or later. Being an efficient law maker there is nothing to worry if others do mistake Mr. Hegde as the people of our state know how nightmare it was to corrupt officials and politicians under your rule of Lokayukta.

Encounter specialist Daya Nayak killed many people with underworld links. Later underworld dons used his help to eliminate their opponents. It really hard to prove or even suspect his links with underworld dons.
Vast majority of the people treat Daya Nayak as a ಸುಬಗ. ಒಳಗಿನ ಗುಟ್ಟು ಶಿವನೇ ಬಲ್ಲ.
In the same manner lokayuktha has plenty opportunities to make money like any other law enforcing agency.

Krishna, We have to go by final results. That is, he killed more than 80 underworld elements and terrorists inspite of knowing that they may target him any time. For doing all this if he earns some money what is wrong?
