Mangaluru, Jul 11: The latest 3D heart mapping system at KMC Hospital, Jyothi here was inaugurated by Dr Jayaprakash Shenthar, professor, electrophysiology unit from Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Science & Research, Bengaluru on Saturday July 10.
KMC is the only hospital in Mangaluru that offers 3D, minimal radiation, heart mapping.
3D Minimal Radiation SJM-EnSite Velocity heart maping is used to track irregular heartbeats to cure arrhythmias with radiofrequency ablation that destroys abnormal tissue. It combines navigation, imaging and mapping capabilities to precisely locate catheters in the heart, and is especially valuable for mapping complicated arrhythmias and processing heart images into detailed 3D models.
Speaking to media persons after the inauguration, Dr Jayaprakash Shenthar said, “Most of the instances of arrhythmia are considered as heart attacks. 3D Mapping System can provide a permanent solution for arrhythmia. This is not angiogram but variations in heart beating are addressed by cardiac electrophysiologist. I am very happy that my student Dr Maneesh Rai is continuing the work which I started here.
"Electrophysiology lab can detect even minute issues in the heart beat. There is 99% solution for the problem related to variation in the heart beating. Angiogram requires X-ray but this does not need any X-ray. Once cured it is a permanent solution," he added.
Dr R L Kamath HOD dept of cardiology KMC hospital said, "It is a proud moment for KMC cardiology department. This is the first dedicated electrophysiology lab of its kind. This facility will provide doorstep solution to the problems faced by the patients of coastal area."
Dr Anand Venugopal, medical superintendent, KMC Hospitals, Dr Padmanabha Kamath, Dr M N Bhat, Dr Narasimha Pai and other cardiologists of KMC hospital were present on the occasion.
The procedure might last up to 2-3 hours depending upon the complexity of arrhythmia. The cost of the test is around Rs 10,000 and total expenditure for the treatment might be up to Rs 55,000. The patient is discharged within one or two days.
