Defence secretary, Assam Police chief get NHRC notice

New Delhi, July 17 (IANS): The NHRC has issued notice to the union defence secretary and the chief of Assam Police after taking suo motu cognizance of a media report that three women, including a teenager, were allegedly raped by soldiers in Dokmoka town of the state in April.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raised a serious issue of human rights violations, it said in a statement on Friday.

It has given two weeks' time to the two officials to respond to its notice.

According to the media report, the soldiers while on patrolling duty reached Khorsim Athor village and took a 13-year-old girl to a jungle nearby in Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong district of Assam.

The girl's mother and a relative went after them to rescue her, but they too were sexually assaulted.

The NHRC statement said a police team has been constituted to conduct an inquiry. Medical examination of the victims has also been conducted.
