Bengaluru, Jul 17: The trifurcation of the Bengaluru University got the assent of Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Friday.

The State Legislative Assembly passed the Karnataka State Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2015providing for the trifurcation of Bengaluru university into Bengaluru University, Bengaluru Central University and Bengaluru North University.

The three universities have been carved out based on geographical boundaries on the basis of legislative assembly constituencies.

Bengaluru University with Campus at Gnanabharathi would have jurisdiction over the areas of assembly constituencies of Vijayanagara, Padmanabhanagar, Bommanahalli, Anekal, Bengaluru South, Yeshwantpur, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Dasarahalli, Mahalakshmi Layout and Govindaraja Nagar of Bengaluru Urban district, Nelamangala of Bengaluru Rural district, Magadi, Ramanagara, Kanakapura and Chennapatna of Ramanagara district.

The Bengaluru Central University with headquarters at Bengaluru Central College would have territorial jurisdiction over the constituencies of Shanthinagar, Byatarayanapura, Yelahanka, Malleshwaram, Hebbal, Shivajinagar, Gandhinagar, Chamarajpet, Chickpet, Basavanagudi, BTM Layout, Jayanagar and Rajajinagar in Bengaluru urban district.

The Bengaluru North University with headquarters at Jangamakote in Sidlaghatta taluk would have territorial jurisdiction over Srinivasapura, Mulbagal, Kolar Gold Field, Bangarpet, Kolar, Malur of Kolar district, KR Puram, Pulakeshinagar, Sarvagnanagar, CV Raman Nagar and Mahadeva[ira of Bengaluru Urban district, Gowribidanur, Bagepalli, Chikkaballapur, Sidlaghatta and Chintamani of Chikkaballapur district, Devanahalli, Doddaballapur and Hoskote of Bengaluru Rural district.

BJP members CT Ravi and S Suresh Kumar opposed the division of universities on the geographical boundaries of assembly constituencies.

They wanted all the colleges in Bengaluru city retained in one university.

CT Ravi wanted the universities named after eminent persons in various fields who have done the state proud. He also said that the Rs10cr allocated for the trifurcation the university was too meagre and wanted it to be enhanced.

However, Higher Education Minister RV Deshpande piloting the bill defended the decision on naming of the universities.

“We want to retain the advantage of brand Bangalore for the benefit of the students. Bangalore has acquired global recognition for higher education and research. We want the students to benefit from that," he said.

The house later passed the bill with voice vote.
