Kundapur, Jul 20: An eighteen-year-old girl committed suicide by consuming rat poison at her home and breathed her last at a hospital after she was rushed by family members there. The incident occurred at Kannadakudru near Hemmady in the taluk on Saturday July 18.

Swati (18), daughter of Sheena Poojary from Kannadakudru, used to work in a dental clinic in the town. In the recent past, she had fallen in love with a youth from Haregodu near Hemmady, it is said. The bond between the two grew so strong that the lovers had even decided to marry.

In a surprising development, the boy, it is said, began mentally torturing the girl along with three of his friends since the last some days. The girl could not take this attitude of her love on her stride, and on account of tension which kept mounting in her mind, she consumed poison mixed with some sweets on Thursday last. Her family members, who came to know about this development, rushed her to a hospital in Kundapur and then to Manipal, in a bid to save her life. In spite of efforts put in by doctors, she could not be saved, and her end came on Saturday.

It is gathered that moments before her death, Swati revealed to the doctors about her love going sour, and names of the youngsters who inflicted insults on her. Photographs and other details of these accused were found stored in her cell phone.

The policemen from the town have registered a case against these youngsters on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim's father. They are now making efforts to nab the accused.
