US troops 'mistakenly' kill eight Afghan soldiers


Kabul, July 20 (IANS): At least eight Afghan army soldiers were killed and five wounded after the US Air Force contingent of the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission mistakenly attacked a security checkpoint in eastern Logar province on Monday.

"Helicopters of the US forces bombed an army security checkpoint in district early Monday, leaving eight soldiers killed and five wounded," a source told Xinhua news agency.

"A number of national army personnel were killed and wounded after a checkpoint was destroyed in Baraki Barak district as a result of coalition forces' firing," General Zahir Azimi, Afghan defence ministry spokesman tweeted.

He also said an investigation was launched into the attack.
