Mangaluru: DC urges govt to set up INS Viraat aircraft carrier museum in city

Mangaluru, Jul 21: Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim informed here on Tuesday July 21 that he has requested the government to set up INS Viraat aircraft carrier museum in Mangaluru.

INS Viraat aircraft carrier, the last British-built ship serving with the Indian Navy, is the oldest aircraft carrier in service in the world and is one of three carriers based in the Indian Ocean region. It has had service life of 56 years, and is to be decommissioned next year.

Addressing a press meet here, the DC said that he has written a letter to Kaushik Mukherjee, chief secretary to the government to send a proposal to the commanding flag officer, Karnataka naval area and the ministry of defence to set up an aircraft carrier museum after the decommissioning of INS Viraat in 2016.

In his letter, the DC also mentioned that Mangaluru would be an ideal location for the museum. "Mangaluru is an ideal location on the western coast, with a population of 5 lac in the city and more than 20 lac in the district. It is also well connected via rail, road, sea and air network to the rest of the world," the letter states.

"The coastline and the river bank of the Gurpur and Netravathi rivers encircling Mangaluru city will be an ideal location for the INS Viraat aircraft carrier museum, either on the Bengre sand pit area or on the mainland. Even a floating one can be explored on the Netravati river," the letter adds.

The approxiamate area of a ship is around 10, 000 sq mtr. If the museum is set up, it can be maintained either by the Mangaluru City Corporation, the tourism department or the archaeology department which runs various museums, said the DC in the letter.

    In Mangalore INS Viraat aircraft carrier museum is not required.

    Nalin Kumar and K.Prabhakar Bhat may use this as go-shaala/Cow shelter.

    AT LEAST IN MANGALORE SOME SWIMMING POOLS ARE MADE IT IS BETTER.

    SWIMMING IS BETTER FOR EVERY HUMAN BEING AND IT IS A LIFE SAVING TECHNIQUE ANYWHERE, ANY PLACE AND AT ANY TIME.

    FOOT PATHS, GOOD BITUMINS ASPHALTING OF ROADS, HOUSING TO POORS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED. WHO WILL ACCOMPLISH THIS GENUINELY.

    Just the other day it was a 90 Acre Memorial, and now we will have 10,00 Sq.Mt rusty junk museum as though we have nothing to offer as a viable tourism project....... WOW...!!!

    Why can't these people take advice of Coastal people in developing our economy through tourism...??

    The question raised by Mr. Dave, Mangalore is like on behalf of the citizens of Mangalore. The authorities should provide basic amenities first and think other museum. Mangalore became the footpath less city.

    Of-course, it is a good proposal. But if we walk around Mangalore city, you will wonder - is it the same city which gets Crores of Rupees from State and Central funds. Many interior roads are horrible, road sides are dirty, vendors on the road sides looks like they never take bath for weeks. Thanks God, our villages in Dakshina Kannada are still clean except on the road sides.

    Dear DC Sir,

    If the administration remembers , there is a Museum called as " Mirakar Bungalow- Shrimathibai Museum ", located at Bejai. Please observe the status of this museum. This building was donated by one of the richest man of Mangalore to the government along with the artifacts owned by him.Today nobody visits this because it is not maintained by the government. How of Mangalorean remember that a Museum like this exists. The building is almost 90 years old and the surrounding is a natural park. Gradually it is becoming a part of the builder sharks.Before bringing in INS Virat, please issue guideline for maintaining this monument which has a long history.This may not require so much of money like the proposed INS Viraat Museum. What is the significance of this ship for Mangalore! except that you want to make it a showpiece

    Srimanthi Bai Memorial Museum City's only museum, which links modern Indian history with the 16th century objects. Col. V.R. Miraskar Mangalorean by birth during one of his posting in pre-Independence India, had stayed in a bungalow he liked it so much that he built an almost exact replica of it at Bejai. Later the State Archaeological Department converted the bungalow into a museum. The museum is named after the Colonel's mother with many of the exhibits are from his own collection he has collected over 40 years. The house has three floors and its huge teakwood caskets filled with Artifacts ranging from ancient coins, second century stone idols, 18th century brass image Gallery, lamps, life-size wooden figures can also be found. You can also find pottery, porcelain and glass from China and Japan. Neolithic tools, palm-leaf manuscripts, puppetry artifacts and a large collection of old paintings are also displayed. Located at Betta Gudda, of Bejai Main Road.
