Mangaluru, Jul 21: A course on psychological first aid for the teachers of higher primary and high schools was inaugurated at Shanthi Kiran Bajjodi by Fr Dr Aloysius Paul D'souza, bishop of Mangaluru on Friday July 17.
The course was organized by Shanthi Kiran Counseling centre with the aim to quip the teachers with skills to indentify, assess and guide the adolescents in their psychological needs, emotional problems, developmental hazards and psychological behaviors. The topics on adolescent psychology, their problems counseling skills and soft skills are dealt with by the experts.
This course consists of two levels of weekend seminars and four months of practicum. It is held for all higher primary and high school teachers under the management of Mangalore diocese in three zones. A team of psychologists and counselors will be facilitating as resource persons during the seminars.
Inaugurating the seminar the bishop appreciated the new concept 'Psychological first aid'and encouraged all the teachers to take keen interest in the personality development of the children. Speaking from his experience and examples the bishop convinced the teachers about their role as guide, mother and counselor to help the child in problems in the school.
Fr Dr A P D'souza bishop of Mangaluru, Fr Jerald D'souza secretary CBE, Fr Peter D'souza director Pastoral Institute and Fr Arun Lobo were present on the dais. Fr Gratian Alvares compered the program.
Shanthi Kiran Counseling Centre is situated near Nathoor Junction a few yards away in the Shathi Kiran Bajjodi Campus. With the motto 'Service with compassion and competence' the centre renders services to all non-discriminating caste, creed, religion, sexual orientations or political affiliations. It offers specialized services in stress management, anger management, adjustment difficulties, adolescent counseling, youth counseling, couple counseling and family counseling.
