Bengaluru: Jul 22 (DHNS): In a disturbing trend, seven debt-stressed young farmers committed suicide in the State on Tuesday.

A young farmer from Honnegowdana Doddi under Huliyurudurga hobli of Kunigal taluk, Tumakuru district, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house on Tuesday.

The victim H K Raju (30) was upset after twin attempts to sink borewell sunk on his four-acre land failed. Raju was burdened with loans running into lakhs of rupees he had taken for agricultural and personal needs. Three days back, he had received a loan recovery notice from a cooperative bank.

A debt-trapped sugar cane grower from Aralakuppe in Pandavapura taluk in Mandya district ended life by consuming pesticide at his six-acre farm. The victim Mahendra (45) was burdened with debts of up to Rs 4 lakh.

Constant harassment

Unable to bear constant harassment from private moneylenders, a 32-year-old farmer from Diguva Chintapalli in Srinivaspur taluk of Kolar district ended his life by consuming pesticide at his farm in the early hours of Tuesday.

Suresh had grown tomato on his three-acre farm. He is said to have taken loans of Rs seven lakh from several moneylenders in Srinivaspur to sink borewell on his farm. All three borewells sunk on his farm didn't yield water. In her complaint, Ratnamma, the mother of Suresh, has blamed harassment by moneylenders for her sons death.

A debt-ridden farmer of Doddakadanur in Holenarasipura taluk, Hassan district, who had consumed pesticide in a bid to end his life on July 16, died in a hospital on Tuesday. Chandregowda (47), a tobacco cultivator, had availed a farmloan of Rs 4 lakh from a cooperative bank.

Another young farmer from Tadavalaga in Indi taluk of Vijayapura district committed suicide by consuming poison on Tuesday. It is learnt, mounting debts and crop failure had pushed Marulasiddappa Bandeppa Badiger to suicide. Marulasiddappa was burdened with loans amounting to Rs seven lakh taken from a nationalised bank and PICARD, said Indi DySP Mahadev Tungal.

A 46-year-old farmer committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at his farm near Devagiri in Haveri taluk on Monday night.

It is said the victim Nagappa Aladakatti, who owns six-acre of dry land, had taken loans of Rs 2.3 lakh from a bank and private moneylenders.

Rekhya Naik (51) ended her life by hanging himself from a tree in his farm at Mandenakoppa village in Shivamogga on Tuesday. He had borrowed loans to the tune of Rs 1.5 lakh from bank and private money lenders. The paddy crop he had grown on his one-acre land did not yield.
