Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu discharged from hospital

Johannesburg, Jul 22 (IANS/EFE): Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu was on Tuesday discharged from a hospital after being treated for a week for an infection.

The veteran anti-apartheid activist will be getting plenty of rest, according to a statement from the foundation that bears his name, while his family expressed their gratitude for the support they received during the trying time.

The 83-year-old icon was admitted to the hospital in Cape Town last week after he failed to respond to antibiotics administered to stave off an infection.

The activist remains an active voice in South African civil society and a prominent critic of the government despite the infirmities of age, which have landed him in the hospital several times in recent years.

Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his open denunciation of the segregationist apartheid regime from the pulpit.
