Pressurise Bengal administration to uphold law and order: BJP to governor

Kolkata, July 22 (IANS): Claiming that law and order has collapsed in West Bengal, the BJP on Wednesday urged Governor K.N. Tripathi to put pressure on police and the administration to establish the rule of law.

In a memorandum to Tripathi, the BJP referred to incidents of abduction of women, trafficking, molestation, rape and murder, and accused cadres of the ruling Trinamol Congress of committing most of the acts.

"Therefore, police were forced to remain mute spectators in most of the cases. The entire law and order situation of our state has collapsed totally," the memorandum said.

"If the rule of law is established through your pressure, the entire state will remain grateful to you," it said.

The BJP delegation to Raj Bhavan alleged that police have been beaten up, shot at and even murdered, "but cases were framed in such a way that no culprit is either arrested or given a lenient case so that they get bail unopposed".

Referring to the abduction of two women in South 24 Parganas and Burdwan districts respectively, the memorandum alleged that the abductors in both cases were from the ruling party.

The BJP said that with the state slated to hold elections to three municipal corporations and one Mahakuma Parishad, besides scores of by-polls to panchayat seats, there could be a fresh round of bloodshed.
