Kundapur, Jul 23: The squad of the district superintendent of police (SP), acting under the guidance of SP Annamalai, raided a place in Koteshwar near here on Wednesday July 21. The squad had gathered reliable information that gambling with cards was regularly carried out at the spot by using tokens in place of money.

Reportedly, the club owned by Mahesh Ganiga was involved with organizing gambling with cards at a place which is located very near to a school. The building behind Koteshwar junior college was raided by the squad led by police inspector, Jayashankar. The policemen arrested 21 persons engaged in cards game. They took into possession three tables, 21 chairs, token glasses, cards, and Rs 25,600 placed there for betting.

In the past, several complaints made by locals to the police personnel had not elicited any action. It is said that club was using licence standing in some other name for running some other activities. Since the last five to six months, tokens were used for betting here. Some informants who opted to remain anonymous said that they were compelled to complaint to the SP as it vitiated the atmosphere here and it violated the stipulation about conducting certain activities in the vicinity of educational institutions.
