15 dead in suicide bombings in Cameroon

Yaounde, Jul 23 (IANS/EFE): At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured in two suicide bombing attacks in the Cameroon's Maroua city, media reported.

The first explosion occurred in the afternoon at a market, while the second occurred in a highly-populated neighbourhood.

The attacks may have been carried out by two female suicide bombers, witnesses told Cameroon-Info newspaper.

Northern Cameroon has been a recent target of terrorist attacks on several occasions, as at least 16 people were killed on July 12 in a suicide bombing in Fotokol, another northern town located near the Nigerian border.

Since then, Cameroon has been on heightened alert full with strengthened security measures, including the prohibition of women wearing a full veil in the north of the country.

Although no party has claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attacks, all suspicions point to Boko Haram, which has killed more than 500 people in Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger in recent weeks.
