Mangaluru, Jul 23: Dengue and swine flue (H1N1), which had threatened to envelop the coast in a bind and had created a scare of spreading like wildfire, have been showing declining trend since the last some weeks. Health department sources said that the number of suspected cases which were around 40 every day during June and July have slumped to just ten per day now.

In Dakshina Kannada district, 1,986 dengue cases had been reported between January 1 and July 20 this year. Out of them, 1,622 were NS1 cases, with 364 falling under Elisa tests. Puttur with 607 cases had stood first as far as number of cases was concerned, and Bantwal, with 408 cases, was on the second spot.

During the same period, 347 suspected swine flu cases were reported in this district, of which 70 were confirmed. A total of six deaths occurred due to swine flue, the department said.

In Udupi district, 65 H1N1 cases were confirmed between January and July 22. Out of them, five lost their lives. In the recent past, only one case was reported during July.

In July, 135 suspected dengue cases and 38 malaria cases were documented.

It is being analyzed that heavy rain has destroyed the breeding grounds of mosquitoes. People are advised to keep surroundings of their houses clean, desist from throwing away plastic items, sachets etc in public places, stop disposing off coconut and tender coconut shells at places where water can get stagnated in them, and such other measures to ensure that these diseases do not raise their ugly heads again and create scare.
