Delhi government seeks Jung's approval to appoint Maliwal

New Delhi, July 23 (IANS): In a climbdown, the Delhi government on Thursday sought Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung's approval for the appointment of Swati Maliwal as chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).

"We have sent her file to the Lt. Governor for his signature. We are not making it an issue," Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia told the media.

The announcement came a day after Jung rejected the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's appointment of Maliwal as the DCW chief.

On Thursday, her nameplate was removed and her staff barred from entering the office of DCW.

Jung's office said the appointment of Maliwal, a social activist and the wife of an AAP leader, was "in breach of rules and procedures" and "had no legal sanctity".

The Delhi government had said it acted well within its powers.
