Khaleda Zia appears in court in a graft case

Dhaka, July 23 (IANS): Former Bangladeshi prime minister Khaleda Zia appeared in a court for hearing in two graft cases on Thursday, a media report said.

The court has fixed August 3 for the hearing in Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust graft cases, Xinhua news agency reported.

The proceedings in the graft cases started at the special court set up in an old Dhaka school.

One of the cases was filed in July 2008 and it said that Khaleda and five others, including her elder son Tarique Rahman, had embezzled over 20 million taka ($253,164) from an orphanage trust during her tenure as prime minister from 2001-2006.

In 2011, the anti-graft agency sued Khaleda and three others for pocketing 31.5 million taka ($397,435) of the Zia Charitable Trust in the name of her late husband Ziaur Rahman, the former president of the country.
