Army foils infiltration bid, two militants killed

Srinagar, July 23 (IANS): An infiltration bid across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district has been foiled and two militants killed, the army said on Thursday. Two soldiers were injured in the incident.

"An attempt of infiltration by heavily-armed terrorists in Tangdhar Sector of frontier Kupwara Division was foiled on July 22/23 by the vigilant Army personnel deployed along the LoC resulting in killing of two terrorists and recovery of weapons and warlike stores," an army statement said.

It said the bodies of the two infiltrators have been recovered but their identity and the outfit they were affiliated to has yet to be ascertained.

According to the statement, the militants were spotted along the LoC on the evening of July 22 and the "robust counter infiltration grid in place immediately picked up the terrorists and kept them under constant surveillance till they reached within firing range".

"In the inclement weather, the terrorists took shelter behind the boulders and the intermittent exchange of fire continued on July 22 and 23," it said, adding the gunfight ended with the gunning down of both the militants.

An officer and soldier received splinter injuries and were brought to the Army Base Hospital here. "The condition of both Army personnel is stable," it said.

"Search of the area, undertaken in the afternoon on July 23, resulted in recovery of two bodies of the slain terrorists along with two AK 47 rifles, two rucksacks and other warlike stores. The operation was continuing till last reports," the statement said.
