Bengaluru, Jul 26 (DHNS): As many as six farmers committed suicide in the State on Saturday.

A debt-ridden farmer from Sopadla village in Ramdurg taluk of Belagavi district committed suicide by hanging from a tree on Saturday. Bavasab Fakrusab Yandgeri (55) owned four acres of land and had availed loan to the tune of Rs 1.10 lakh from a nationalized bank, Rs 30,000 from primary agriculture co-operative bank and Rs 32,000 by pledging gold. He was unable to repay the loan as crops failed. Ramdurg police have registered a case.

Gurusiddashetty (60) ended his life by hanging himself from a tree in Elehundi village of HD Kote taluk in Mysuru district. He owned an acre bagar hukum land and had submitted an application for regularisation of his possession. He is said to have borrowed Rs two lakh to maintain the family as his crops had failed. However, tahsildar M Nanjundaiah said that the farmer did not commit suicide owing to debt burden. He was suffering from cancer and committed suicide due to dejection in life.

Kenchegowda (58) of Savandipura in Malavalli taluk of Mandya district ended his life by consuming poison. He had borrowed two lakh from banks and an equal sum from private persons, according to the complaint lodged by his son.

Aimappa (42), a farmer of Bangavadi village in Srinivaspur taluk of Kolar district committed suicide by consuming poison on Friday night. He had loans totalling to Rs five lakh and two borewells sunk on his 30-gunta land had dried up.

Basavaraja Bheemappa Olekar (48) of Ghalapooji village in Bydagi taluk of Haveri district, who had consumed poison on Friday, died in the hospital on Saturday. He owned 2.13 acres of land and had loans totalling to around Rs 1.60 lakh. Fifty-two-year-old Devendrappa Pavada Shetty ended his life by hanging himself in Jantli village of Gadag taluk. The crops grown on his 1.50 acre of land had failed. According to his family members he had borrowed Rs 70,000 from a bank and Rs four lakh
from private money lenders.
