Uttar Pradesh gets NHRC notice over minor's rape

New Delhi, July 30 (IANS): The NHRC has issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government over the rape of a mentally and physically challenged minor girl in a government hospital, an official said on Thursday.

Citing media reports, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said the incident took place on the intervening night of July 15-16 at a hospital in Mathura.

"Notice has been issued to the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh calling for a report in the matter within four weeks," the NHRC said.

"Government-run hospitals are duty-bound to exercise due care and heightened vigil and not to leave the helpless patients at anybody's mercy. It appears that the lack of security led to this incident which is a violation of human rights of the victim," NHRC said.

According to the media report, the 10-year-old orphan girl was admitted to the hospital for treatment after she fell from a moving train. The girl was kidnapped from the hospital by two men and then raped.
