NHRC issues notice to Karnataka govt over farmers' suicides

New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI): The National Human Rights Commission has expressed 'grave' concern over alleged farmers' suicides in Mandya district of Karnataka over low payment by sugar mills and issued a notice to the state government seeking a reply within four weeks.

Mandya, known as the 'sugar bowl' of Karnataka, has seen a spate of farmer deaths as the mills were paying them Rs 700-800 per tonne, despite the Chief Minister's promise of purchasing at Rs 2,500 per tonne, the NHRC said.

The deaths due to suicides by farmers is of grave concern and calls for prompt and quick remedial steps by the government, the rights body said.

It has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka calling for a report in the matter within four weeks.

Referring to a media report in this regard, it said that the "negligence" by the state and Union governments in the matter of fixing fair price, payment of arrears by mills and a sugarcane glut are the main reasons for the sudden spike in the suicides.

High time stop blame game and really help poor farmers.
The farmers are mostly ignorant of govt schemes and land in the hands of blood sucker money lenders NABARD is a Govt orgnaisation which provides loans to farmers through banks their schemes are easy and v. helpful to farmers also they guide farmers on rain harvesting, use of fertilizers, formation of co-operative marketing so that farmers can sell directly w/o middlemen, and many more schemes, educated people should inform farmers. need to find out about region NABARD office and help farmers approach them actually it is duty of GOVT also, to bring to notice of farmers reg. these organsiations. These organisations are mostly run on tax payers money so farmers should be benefited.

I would like to request "DAIJIWORLD" to support a campaign "TO STOP FARMERS SUICIDE".

We in Daijiworld used to contribute to the people who are not able to afford for the medical expenses. In the same manner please start a source to collect the information of the farmers with proof documents and lets start helping them from our small contribution.
"Our small investment will save lives". We need to keep in mind that farmers are more important to our world than engineers or doctors and including other professions.
As we all know we have the art of taking out the honey from the honey comb but art of producing the honey only bees have it.
So the above statement will fit for the farmers as well.
Hope Daijiworld and the followers of Daijiworld will agree with my views.

Great. This is the exact job of the Human Right Commission. I am happy that notice has been served to both State / Central Government. When elected representatives, Govt. Administration fails to stop this kind of suicide of farmers - I am anticipating that the judicial body will raise to the occasion and question Government. I did not understand that till day why our State Commission is maintained salience? In fact that our state Government does not wants to perform this Commission actively. Otherwise why the State Government not filled the President of this Commission since two years ?

Now I do not how our Government State / Central respond to this notice. Can we expect some drastic step ?

It is a gory situation of Mandya. State govt is fully responsible for farmers suicide in Mandya. Mandy is experiencing drought like situation since three years. Karnataka govt neglecting farmers by not releasing enough water for cultivation from KRS dame, instead releasing water to Tamilnadu. additionally water being not released citing the maintenance work at KRS, which is never ending issue for KRS officials. To add more salt to the wounds of farmers, sugar mills are not collecting/accepting cane harvest on time which is causing loss to farmer due to drying. Also farmers payments being held by sugar mills for 6 months to year. It will be the post and pillar situation to collect the bill amount from the mills. As of now sugar cane production in Mandya is least compare to northern Karnataka and southern Maharashtra. Karnataka govt need to come out of coma to safeguard the interest of farmers and allow them live their life with comfort and peace.
