Guwahati, July 31 (IANS): With Assam completing construction of 91 percent of school toilets under the "Swachh Vidyalaya" programme, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday directed the authorities concerned to expedite the completion of toilets in all schools by August 10.

Funds for the construction of school toilets were provided by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), public sector undertakings and the corporate sector.

Under the Swachh Vidyalaya programme, Assam has completed construction of 33,154 toilets out of 35,725, and the construction of the remaining 2,571 are going on in full swing.

At the national-level, Assam's rate of completion is 91.84 percent as against Bihar's 72.41 percent, Haryana's 84.68 percent and Madhya Pradesh's 88.07 percent, according to the statement.

Gogoi's directive came at a review meeting in which he said that to make the state clean and healthy, construction of toilets at schools must be completed at the earliest, according to an official statement.

Friday's meeting was attended by Education Minister Sarat Borkotoky and other senior officials.

In Assam, under SSA and RMSA, 26,662 toilets have been constructed out of the targeted 26,809.

Gogoi directed the authorities concerned to complete the construction of the remaining 147 toilets by August 10.

Under corporate sector, out of the total 79 toilets, construction of 66 toilets have been completed and the construction of the rest 13 will be completed "very soon", the statement added.

In schools under the PSU sector, construction of 642 toilets have been completed and the construction work of 2,218 toilets is underway.

The chief minister directed the state education department to write to the ONGC and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited for not starting work on construction of 193 toilets.
