Current stalemate due to arrogance of government: Congress

New Delhi, July 31 (IANS): The Congress on Friday said the current stalemate in parliament was due to the "obduracy and arrogance" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government.

"The opposition is doing its duty in raising issues which are in public domain. Parliament has to ensure the accountability of the government," Congress spokesman Anand Sharma told the media.

He said the country was waiting to hear "what happened between him and Nawaz Sharif at (Russian city) Ufa. He has not spoken".

"We are left only to hear the Pakistani version of what was discussed and what was committed. This country has to be taken into confidence. The prime minister cannot brazen it out by remaining silent," he added.

Sharma said the Congress party had made a very reasonable proposition to the government over the logjam in parliament.

"If there was a deadlock in the house, the parliamentary affairs minister was entrusted by the cabinet to talk to the leaders in the opposition to break the deadlock. This government has until today made no effort," he said.

The Congress leader added that it was the government's responsibility to ensure that parliament functions smoothly.

"You can just count on one finger and that this is government's legislative agenda. What are they blaming the opposition for?" he asked.

"We have made it absolutely clear more than once to the government that discussion on the threat of terrorism emanating from our neighbourhood must be comprehensive, must include all violations particularly in the Kashmir Valley."
