Udupi, Jul 31: The issues of sterilization of stray dogs and compulsory registration of pet dogs dominated the City Municipality Council meeting on Friday July 31.

Opposition party leader Dinkar Shetty Herga, raising the issue of stray dog menace during the question-answer session said that stray dogs are increasing in number and found strolling on college campuses, bus stands, Malpe harbour, and the railway station.

Ragavendra, environment engineer, said, “There are hundreds of stray dogs but there is no provision to shift them from one place to another after the sterilization procedure.”

CMC president Yuvaraj decided to compulsorily register pet dogs in the city. “Otherwise, dog owners will have to pay for their irresponsibility. It will help control stray dogs and the rule will soon be implemented in the city.”

Narasimha Nayak raised the plight of Manipal and Malpe roads. He said that the deep potholes in the road are a danger to motorists and pedestrians and urged them to take immediate action.

Prashant Amin alleged that the CMC is showing little interest in the waste disposal process in some wards.

Commissioner D Manjunathaiah said Manipal Hospital has cleared the parking problem. They have managed to make available visitor parking for 50 two-wheelers, which is closed to OPD.

The DC has issued notices for 68 unlicensed shops to be vacated from the Manipal area. The CMC has collected Rs 27, 08, 457 tax from all 68 shops.

In 2012, the CMC had received awards for water management with a one lac cash prize. President Yuvaraj answered M R Pai regarding the award and said, “The prize amount will be spent on water management planning in future.”

Malfunctioning street light and sand mining problems were also discussed at the meeting. Vice-president Amritha Krishnamurthy was also present.
