Congress has not appreciated my work: Tharoor to Sonia

New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI): Former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor, who was recently snubbed by Congress President Sonia Gandhi has complained to her that his "sincere" services to the party have "neither been seen nor appreciated".

"I am dismayed, indeed distressed, by our exchange at the morning meeting. If you have read the press leaks in today's papers, it is obvious that they were maliciously aimed at me, seeking to portray me as an isolated figure in the party," he said in the letter written the same day.

The provocation for the snub was the alleged leak by him of his views against the party's stalling tactics in Parliament at a strategy meet of Congress on July 21.

Tharoor had earlier found himself in problems over his praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a few occasions ever since he came to power last year and attracted criticism within the party for that.

He had accepted the Prime Minister's invitation to join the 'Clean India' campaign and had recently praised Modi's campaign on yoga and had also remarked that the Prime Minister leaves a positive impact on the countries he visits though he follows the UPA policies.

Alleging that those who had spoken to the media after July 21 meeting were trying to "embarrass" him and perhaps discourage him from expressing views in future meetings, Tharoor saw an "agenda" behind it.

"Yet, your comments this morning were based on the assumption that I was responsible for the leaks. Why I on earth would I have spoken to the media to undermine myself and my standing within the party?" he said in the letter.

"I hope there is no misunderstanding of either my conduct or my intentions. I served the party's interests with sincerity and to the best of my ability, while often feeling that this has neither been seen nor appreciated. The events of the last 24 hours sadly suggest that this remained the case, "Tharoor said concluding it.

When asked about the letter, Tharoor said today,"I will neither confirm nor deny because even responding to such a question legitimises your line of inquiry."

Responding to a query that whether he was unhappy with the party, the Kerala MP said,"I would like to reiterate that I am fully satisfied with my role and work within the Congress party".

In the letter Tharoor suspected an "agenda" of those behind the leaks and cited various reports especially in Malayalam media about Gandhi "scolding" him to buttress his accusation.

"In the interests of party loyalty, I have refused to comment, just as I refused yesterday to discuss what I said behind closed doors. But the leakers must be very happy, since they have succeeded not only in discrediting me but in apparently enlisting your name for the purpose.

"It is obvious that some people have managed to persuade you that I have been speaking to the Press against party interests. Nothing could be farther from the truth," he said in the letter.

Alluding to his wife Sunanda Pushkar's death last year, Tharoor said,"ever since my personal tragedy and the ghoulish attention I have received, I have kept my distance from the media. I speak infrequently to them and always on the record; I decline invitations to whisper secrets and gossip anonymously---that is not and has never been my style.

"I would rather be quoted openly than leak. Leaking is the habit of conspirators and cowards. I am neither. Ever since my unwelcome intrusion into their space, however, I have been targeted by both."

Tharoor said he felt it important to clear the air on this because he genuinely believed that the Congress President's creation of a forum where MPs can speak freely to each other and to her had been a great positive for the party.

"I agree with Rahul that the fact that the party entertains differing views does not in itself harm us, what does us damage is the sly attempt by some to portray them as evidence of something they are not--dissidence or disloyalty," he said.

Striking a conciliatory note, Tharoor further said,"I hope there is no misunderstanding of either my conduct or intentions. I served the party's interests with sincerity and to the best of my ability while often feeling that this has neither been seen nor appreciated. The events of the last 24 hours sadly suggest that this remains the case."

In congress since 1947 only one family worked hard for India and i.e., Jawaharlal and Indira Gandhi family, while rest were chamchas. So Tharoor has to decide to remain in congress as chamcha because his good work will never be recognised as his work will bring credit to Gandhi family. So no point in regretting and time to stay or get out from congress.

Mr. Tharoor would never leave congress whatsoever. He very well knows that BJP is a one man party and there is hardly any suitable candidate to succeed Mr. Modi. This BJP bubble will break soon and either AAP or Congress will take the country forward thereafter.

Mr. Tharoor need to transform and adapt a lot. Delhi politics is here and there known for treachery and back-stabbing wherein everything is played straight in UN. Most of those successful in Delhi are those equally successful in covering heap of skeletons from public view wherein those who do not have skeletons in their cupboard alone can move ahead in the world body. As an MP in congress, he has to horn his surviving skills further. Surviving in jungle infested with wild animals and ruthless predators requires an array of skills and adaptation. Credentials as a successful administrator in UN alone make him a misfit to Indian politics. As a human being and world class administrator, he may not and cannot stoop to their level to win a position. This cattle class politicians are capable to make his life a hell.....!

If Tharoor is allowed to leave congress party then, I must say that it will be a great blunder by Congress Hi-command and is loss to the party (i am sorry to see that happen).
If we take a smart look at the hierarchy of Congress senior leadership & spokespersons intellectual quality & ability, every secular patriots & loyal congressmen can see a lot of talent unlike in the past(i.e., before Sonia G become president).
Though I am a passionate fan of Manishankar's secular talks/views but with regard to his views on Tharoor I disagree (without limiting my admiration to Mani).
Even if Tharoor leaves & joins BJP I don't think he will fit in due to his approach & likes to independent/honest & straight thinking & views.

I do not understand why in one's Career life, one has to compare academic qualification. It is only basic entry for one to get Career opportunity and then, left to individual how he/she grows up.

What qualification Late Dirubai Ambani had? He has built Conglomerate biz empire, who is the rarest of the rare GEM of India.
Sonia Gandhi was the Chair person of UPA Govt. for 10 yrs and it was, under her leadership Mr. Taroor was nominated for MP Congress candidate seat. Who has to appreciate whom is left to himself.
