Mangaluru features in smart city list of 6 from state

Daijiworld Media Network-Bengaluru (RJP)

Bengaluru, Aug 2: Mangaluru city has featured in the list of 100 cities nominated from various states for the smart city project. The list has been submitted to the ministry of urban development.

Six cities have been nominated from Karnataka state. They are, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, Shivamogga, Tumakuru and Davanagere. These cities secured the highest scores in the competition.

There were 13 parameters set by the ministry which included existing service level, past track record reforms, implementation of the Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission scheme and self-financing capacity among others. Friday was the deadline for submitting proposals to the Centre.

Bengaluru and Mysuru have failed to qualify and hence do not appear in the list of 100 nominated cities.

20 cities among 100 will be selected for development this year. 40 will be selected next year and the remaining after that.

In the next process, the 100 nominated cities will prepare smart city plans. The plans will be evaluated later in a city challenge competition and the 20 cities will be selected for development next month.

Credibility of smart city plans, action plan for resource mobilisation, economic impact including the number of people to be benefited and employment generation, environmental impact are some of the criteria specified in the evaluation in the second stage of competition.

The selected city will get Rs 500 crore central grant for developmental activities in the next five years with Rs 2 crore immediately released for the preparation of detailed project report.

Smart city concept will remain a mirage with no benefits for the country as such.

Modi, showed his "smartness" by asking the cities themselves to mop up resources, which many cities will fail to keep up.

India will still remain a country of slums while the so called smart cities may come up, unless the entire country is covered with a futuristic plan, that covers all villages and cities alike, which will contribute greatly for our progress.

We are a nation that lacks even the basic modern infrastructure to this date, unfortunately.

Mangalore did not get selected to become smart city, it just got passed in the entrance exam for the Smart city. Cities like Bangalore and Mysuru failed in the entrance exam. Now Mangalore has to compete with 100 cities from across India to become one of the cities in 20 cities to be ed this financial year… There will be 80 loser cities and 20 winner cities. Competition will be conducted to provide fair chance for all cities and find out cities which can ute project like this. Competition will be conducted by Independent agency Blomberg Philanthropies. City selected for Smart city has to raise money from the market by creating a company with equal shareholding of the state government. The smart city company will have CEO and board of directors. Modi government will provide 500 crore, with 100 crore per year based on the implementation performance. Taxes are expected to raise as city has to raise it’s own resources along with monetary support from State, Centre and private sector. More details - smartcitieschallenge.in and smartcities.gov.in

As per latest information only Shivamogga has been chosen for Smart City project in Karnataka by Central govt.
Even bigger cities than Shivamogga like Hubballi, Mysuru, Mangaluru and Belgavi, have not been chosen for Smart City project. Yaddi and his udupi Guddi are happy.

We need to implement Singapore/Hong Kong type plan to develop city in a organized manner.

We need proper drainage system, waste management system, parking facilities, fly overs in congested areas for smooth flow of traffic, Overbridge/underpass & footpaths for pedestrians, radar monitored traffic system, pollution control system etc..

I have seen many people out here who always talk against BJP or their agenda, even if party is doing good stuff they have problem, either they have not learnt to appreciate the things or only learnt to complaint. Folks if good things are happening around just try to appreciate, if its bad its bad even agree irrespective of any party, I feel disgusting some times.

All the Fish & Vegetable markets r very dirty in Mangalore. There r no proper footpaths to walk in Mangalore City. Mangalore Main bus stop is in a very pathetic condition. Street lights r not at all functioning properly. R these issues r not given importance in their 13 parameters when they consider Mangalore as a smart city?

It's funny none here even thinks that this grant may to some extent help our city improve. You guys just crib, post lame comments and call feku. But know that this feku is d one who has been in action rather than just b a puppet. V youth voted him because we don't like puppets ruling out country. Unless mentality of the people changes nothing will ever improve. Look at a development point of perspective rather than just give blunt lame negative comments. It's good to sometimes appreciate the good done. That's when India as a nation will grow.
