New Delhi, Jun 1: I: A man was arrested here for allegedly duping people to the tune of more than Rs.30 million, police said on Thursday.

Gurpreet Singh, 47, was arrested by Delhi Police on Wednesday from his residence in Gurgaon, Haryana. Singh was wanted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in several cases of forgery.

According to police, the accused was first arrested at the international airport here in 1988 on charges of smuggling gold biscuits from Singapore into India but was soon released on bail.

After his release from jail, Singh along with his associates cheated many people in places like Panipat, Sonepat, Faridabad and Gurgaon in Haryana and Delhi, police said.

The accused used to sell land belonging to other people on the basis of forged documents. The Mumbai branch of DRI was also investigating several cases of forgery filed him, police said.

"On sustained interrogation Gurpreet admitted his involvement in a number of cases of cheating and forgery. We are trying to ascertain the number of people he duped," Deputy Commissioner of Police A.S. Cheema said.
