Dubai to build world's longest ski slope

Dubai, Aug 4 (IANS): Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum on Monday launched Meydan One, a tourism development project expected to feature a 1.2 km-long ski slope, an ice rink along with the world's largest fountain, said the ruler's media office.

The project will cover an area of 3.5 million square metres. It will be located between the 829 metres-tall Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower, and the Meydan racecourse in the emirate's centre.

The project's phase one is slated to be completed by 2020, the year Dubai will host The World Expo as the first ever Arab city.

Local newspaper Seven Days tweeted its first impressions of the Meydan One project. Aside from the planned ski slope and ice rink, the development will also introduce the world's largest fountain, capable of shooting water up to 420 metres high, according to Xinhua news agency.

The 1.5 km-long ice rink will be the world's longest. Hotels, residential properties, a shopping mall and a high-rise building called Meydan One Tower are included in the project.

Dubai already has an artificial indoor ski slope in Mall of the Emirates shopping centre, opened in November 2005.

As per Sheikh Mohammed's order, also vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai will double tourist numbers to an annual 20 million by 2020.

I can't imagine how anyone can compare India with Dubai as far as swift and proper developments are concerned. THe main difference is that we in India have the so called politicians who are not only petty minded but also good for nothing. All we can do now is to pray to expect something positive from them.

    Dear AF

Few years back Gov't built sulabh Shouchalay(Toilets) in most of the cities in India. Few days after all fiber doors were missing from these toilets... Tell me now Gov't should depute security personnel protect toilets or we need to maintain these toilets... In India it is indeed not easy to do in India.

    jagdish,

People should show their honesty and govt should do their duty by keeping a guard to its property. in Dubai we see these kinds of security. that's the reason it developed and one more thing if india try to educate the people including muslims then only it will develop. or else no use....

Sulabh was founded by Bindeshwar Pathak from Bihar State in 1970. Sulabh International has built public toilets all over India and hence Sulabh Sauchalayas were not built by the Government
