Jung gives approval for Bharti's prosecution

New Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS): Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung has permitted the police to prosecute AAP legislator Somnath Bharti in connection with a midnight raid in the Khirki extension area here last year.

"The Lt. Governor has granted police the sanction to prosecute Somnath Bharti," an official at the Lt. Governor's house said on Tuesday.

"LG's sanction was necessary to prosecute Bharti in the case as he is an elected representative,” the official added.

The Aam Aadmi Party MLA along with some volunteers had gone to Khirki extension around 3 a.m. on the intervening night of 15-16 January, 2014 to raid the houses of various people of African descent following which African women had alleged AAP volunteers of molesting and harassing them.

Bharti and 17 others were booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
