Home ministry forms panel on policing India-Myanmar border

New Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS): The union home ministry has formed a committee on effective policing along the India-Myanmar border, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said on Tuesday.

"The government has constituted a committee in the home ministry on effective policing along the Indo-Myanmar border with the mandate to conduct an in-depth study of the existing security infrastructure along that border, its vulnerability to security threat and suggest suitable measures for framing an effective policy to strengthen the border policing along the Indo-Myanmar border," Rijiju said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

Two meetings of the committee have already been held.

The minister said there were some isolated incidents along the India-Myanmar border where insurgents reportedly harassed local people to meet their requirements.

"However, border forces through their relentless efforts are dominating the situation effectively," he said.

Rijiju said in some instances, security forces had apprehended individuals with contraband items near the border areas.
