Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day


New Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS): The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day after opposition members on Tuesday raised slogans against the government and accused it of being "dictatorial".

The protests started soon after the house met for the day's proceedings. Congress members shouted slogans, held placards and gathered near the chairman's podium.

The agitating Congress members displayed placards against External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje over their alleged association with former IPL chief Lalit Modi. Madhusudan Mistry waved a piece of black cloth as a mark of protest.

The Congress members were protesting the suspension of 25 of their colleagues in the Lok Sabha.

In the din, Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien adjourned the house till noon. Similar scenes were witnessed when the house met again, and Chairman Hamid Ansari adjourned the house till 2 p.m.

As the house assembled at 2 p.m., disruptions erupted in no time.

Slogans like "Tanashahi nahi chalegi" (We won't allow dictatorship), "Shame on government" and "Don't murder democracy" were raised by the Congress members, following which Kurien adjourned the house for the day.

Members from the treasury benches also shouted slogans but it was not clearly audible.
