Punjab can take on Pakistan-sponsored terrorism: Sukhbir Badal

Tarn Taran (Punjab), Aug 5 (IANS): Punjab was well-equipped to take any Pakistan-sponsored terrorist activity head-on, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said on Wednesday.

Badal, who crossed the barbed wire fencing along the India-Pakistan international border in Khalra sector in the border district of Tarn Taran, said no one would be allowed to subvert peace in Punjab.

"I am here to assure you that the Punjab government is committed to maintaining peace on the border. Any attempt to destabilise this hard won peace will not be tolerated," Badal told farmers and villagers.

He said the government had taken a decision to increase the police force in the border areas.

Badal, who is also Punjab's home minister, made the comments in light of the July 27 terror attack by terrorists from Pakistan on Dinanagar town in Gurdaspur district which left seven people dead.

Punjab shares a 553-km-long international border with Pakistan which is guarded with electrified barbed wire fencing. The border is manned by the Border Security Force (BSF).

Badal, who decided to forgo his security and his bullet proof vehicle during the trip across the fence, was driven to the border areas by Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini.

BSF officers briefed Badal on the security measures in the border areas.
