Jammu AIIMS agitation suspended after government assurance

Jammu, Aug 5 (IANS): After getting an assurance from the Jammu and Kashmir government, a majority of the constituents of the AIIMS coordination committee on Wednesday suspended their agitation.

State Health Minister Choudhary Lal Singh and Forest Minister Bali Baghat called on the office bearers of local chamber of commerce and industry here for a meet.

Union leaders of local traders, transporters and industrialists were present during the meeting, held at the office of the chamber of commerce and industry in Jammu city.

Earlier, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ministers in a press conference re-assured that AIIMS would function in the Kashmir Valley as well as the Jammu region.

The ministers distributed copies of union Health Minister J.P. Nadda's letter in which the Jammu and Kashmir government has been asked to identify 200 acres of land each in the valley and the Jammu region for establishing AIIMS at both the places.

The letter also says that "after land is identified at these two places, teams from the Centre would visit these places to ascertain the technical feasibility for setting up AIIMS there".

After meeting the state BJP ministers, the chamber of commerce and industry president Rakesh Gupta said in the light of the assurances made, it has been decided that all commercial activities would be resumed in Jammu city and rest of the region.

Shops, public transport, other business establishments and educational institutions have been closed in Jammu city for last six days.

Clashes between protesters and security forces were also witnessed at some places during this period.

An important constituent of the coordination committee, the Jammu bar association has, however, dissociated itself from the agreement reached between the majority constituents of the coordination committee and the state government.

Immediately after the news about the agreement spread in the city, the markets started opening up and public transportation could be seen being operational on the roads.
