Kolkata, Aug 6 (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday approached the Calcutta High Court seeking a probe by an independent agency over the hate speech by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee.

The BJP's state unit, which had filed a police complaint against Abhishek, a Trinamool Congress MP, who had during a public rally in June threatened to "gouge out eyes and chop off hands" raised against the state's people, said it was compelled to move the court due to police inaction.

"It is evident that the police under the Banerjee government will never act. So we have moved the court," said BJP office secretary Alak Kumar Guha Roy, who filed the petition.

"In the petition we have urged the court to order an independent agency to probe the matter and initiate necessary legal action against Abhishek who by making such a speech has committed a cognizable offence," he added.

Filed before the bench of Justice Dipankar Datta, the petition will come up for hearing on Monday.
