India releases 16 Pakistani prisoners, 9 fishermen to go Saturday


New Delhi, Aug 7 (IANS): India on Friday repatriated 16 Pakistani prisoners through the Attari-Wagah land border while nine fishermen will be freed on Saturday, as a follow-up to the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Russia's Ufa.

Pakistani authorities have confirmed the nationalities of the 16 prisoners, who were repatriated on Friday, a ministry of external affairs statement said.

It also said that a follow-up to the meeting on July 10, during which it was agreed by the two sides to release fishermen in each other's custody, along with their boats, "cases against nine Pakistani fishermen have been withdrawn, their nationality confirmed with the Pakistani authorities, and they will be repatriated to Pakistan via Attari/Wagah on August 8, 2015".
