Mangaluru , Aug 6: Recognizing the brave act of farmer Frank Fernandes who averted a possible train mishap at Bondel-Pachanady on August 1, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel honoured him on Friday August 7.

Frank had stopped the Mangaluru-Madgaon Intercity Express on August 1 after he noticed a fragmentation on the railway track at Bondel-Pachanady. He used a bunch of red Pagoda flowers as to signal the possible danger, thus averting a train derailment and possibly saving lives. For his brave deed, he was rewarded and lauded by Mangaluru North MLA Mohiuddin Bava recently. The story was first reported by daijiworld.

On Friday, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel visited Frank with his supporters and honoured him with a garland, shawl, 'peta' and Rs 2,500 on behalf of Palakkad division of Southern Railway. He was also given a certificate of merit.

Lauding Frank for his effort, MP Kateel said, "Frank Fernandes on last Saturday made a great attempt by stopping the Mangaluru-Madgaon Intercity Express and averted a possible mishap in the district. After witnessing the fragmentation on the track, he tried to caution the officials but when it failed, with the help of red flowers he stopped the train.

"I learnt about this heroic act of Frank through media and immediately informed the railway minister about it in a letter and demanded that he be honoured on behalf of the railway department for his heroism. This is a good message to the society. Railway minister has also asked the Chennai department to honour Frank. In the coming days, the railway ministry itself will honour him," he said.

"On behalf of the people of Dakshina Kannada, I congratulate him. Media has identified his heroic deed which is commendable. His good deed also makes the entire district proud. This is a great achievement and now he has become a hero of the common man," he added.

For Rs. 2,500.- so much publicity?
At first glance I thought it is Rs.250,000.-
Mr. Nalin Kumar can make some recommendation with Rail Authority of India to offer Frank special reward by way of substantial amount. He saved material damage and people lives.

Thanks Frank Fernandes for doing a good job and saved many peoples lives for averting railway mishap. First of all we thank Mr. Frank Secondly to Mr. Bava MLA & Mr. Kateel-MP. for rewarding him. This looks little, but what Mr. Kateel assured him is far better than what is given. This should be appreciated . He assured him future like talking to the railway minster and the Chennai Department. I hope in the coming days he will be rewarded more. Who knows he may get a job even in the Railways? The Ministers recognized his act also giving a message to the society is also important. Also we must thank daiji for their timely publicity, for the awareness. Hats up Daijiworld, good job as well.

mr frank was not rewarded for his bravery or for saving lives of people. if it was so it shows that the value of lives is only 2500 i think cattle value is more, and secondly he was rewarded because mr. ranjanath of public tv,highlighted this episode and told mr nalin to felicitate him , any way mr frank you are a hero and u will be rewarded by god , all these are publicity rewards

See the crowd if they collect Rs 50 per head then amount will be more than Rs 2500/= I did not understand the logic or yard stick of Railways regarding this incident. If due to derailment of train if anybody injures he will get 50 k death 200 k. Our hero saved so much for railways and they awarded only Rs. 2500? SHAME ON YOU RAILWAYS. GOD BLESS YOU DEAR MR. FRANK

Did Frank sir told any of the commentators that 2500 is not enough to him? For some people even recognition and honor is worth than money. Frank is frank.. If you go and visit Franks house with 1 lac or 10 lac also he may reject. He may be thinking not like some of the commentators here. He is frank

It is good that Southern Railway has recognised Frank for his great job n presence of mind to stop an accident. ButMr. Nalin Kumar, you Politicians do not have to insult him by paying rs.2500/- - which is nothing but a shame on you. Is that what you value his work or is that what is worth so many hundreds of lives he saved. !! Come on stop doing these dramas to get Publicity and mileage. It is nothing but a Shame on Railways & also on people who gave that money - " Peanuts"!!!

Frank deserves not Rs.2,500/- but Twenty-five lakhs. Hope The Government realizes that Frank has averted a disaster and suitably rewards the poor man.

It would not be out of place to make provision to provide Frank's siblings some assignments in the Railways.

Proper felicitations to Mr. Frank Fernandes both by the Parliament Member Mr. Kateel and the Member of the Karnataka State Legislative Assembly Mr. Bava. I forwarded the DW photos to few of my colleagues, who have decades of expertise in railway tracks (railway track engineers, track workers and track supervisors) all track experts said that, even though a certain blank distance measurement is allowed for the track expansion, this said track was way away from these safe measurements. Track experts said that this type of extra track distance caused by the bent tracks could have been fatal for the train, the rim of the wheel would have easily edged-out at it's speed and could have caused a huge derailment easily...

Thank you Mr.nalin for honouring the possible train accident preventer, but the amount of cash award is nothing like peanuts 2500Rs. but atleast give some handsome award so all citizens may motivate and do nobel causes, I am not meaning that good cause should be done for money but the amount of loss he prevented so atleast give something really values in these days as if he goes to hotel to have fine dininig, he cant have one meal along with his family to celebrate by this award money.
